If someone had just been stuck by a used needle, what medications would they take afterwards to prevent transmissions of diseases or other complications?

before i answer, could you tell us if this is in regards to a real situation? if so, we cannot give medical advice here. if this has happened to you or someone you know, and it was in a healthcare setting, there should be a policy in place for this, and i would seek that out asap!

in my own experience when stuck with a used needle...and yes, it's happened a few times......hepatitis and hiv testing was done on me and the patient involved at the time of the stick and again on me in 6 months. i've never been given or even offered any drugs. maybe i've been lucky but i'm disease free.

the centers for disease control and prevention published guidelines for post

exposure prophylaxis for occupational exposure for the first time june 7, 1996.

the most current revision is dated june 29, 2001 and can be viewed at

www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr5011a1.htm

that is a place to start. however, i am sure your facility has procedures in place concerning blood born pathogens (its the law, they had better). talk to your supervisor.
