Hello Nurses!

I'm entering school and am wondering what shifts are like as a nurse. Is it true you can cram a fulltime week into 3 days? What are your shifts like?

Thanks!

I work 3 12 hour midnight shifts a week. I work 7pm-7am. The nights are long but I am busy all night. I only work 36 hours a week with full time benefits.

Some nurses still perfer to work only 8 hours.

3 12s, 36 hours=fulltime. By the end of the 3rd day you usually feel like poo but it is MUCH better for me than going 5 8hr days. There are many other shifts, regular 8hr shifts, if you dont like 12 hr days. Most people find they do though. GL!

I did work 3 12 hour shifts per week, full time. It was nice having 4 days off, only if your unit was lucky enough to be full staffed!! I now work M-F 0800-1600. It was tough to get used to but now can enjoy my evenings with family and not trying to re-coop from the last 36 hours.

Specializes in ICU/ER.

I work every weekend either Sat-Sun 7 to 7 or Fri-Sat 7-7. I can do days or nights, but they have to be on the weekend, every weekend and I get paid for 36 hours for only working 24. I also get full time benefits, and if I chose to work a holiday I get time and a half.

There are 4 of us that do them 2 do the days and 2 do the nights, amongst ourselves we figure out what combo we are going to do.

2 12's and a 16....40 hours in three days and it generally FLIES by (ER)

12 hour shifts (really 13) 3 nights a week. Some hospitals do 3 one week, 4 the next. Some nurses split OT shifts, but you usually can't for regular shifts. A lot of hospitals here don't offer 8 hr shifts.

Specializes in Geriatrics, Transplant, Education.

I work M-F 3pm-11pm in subacute/rehab. LOVE knowing that my schedule is always consistent.

Typical hospital shifts are 7a-3p, 3p-11p, 11p-7a. Then there's 7a-7p, 7p-7a (my shift!), and 11a-11p. Haven't personally seen 11p-11a as a regular shift, but I suppose it's out there.

So yes, you can cram a whole lotta hours into a short time, if you need to.

Heck, I crammed a full-time work week into 2 days for two years. I had Monday through Friday off, then worked 16-hour weekend double shifts on Saturday and Sunday. My workplace paid me for 40 hours under the Baylor Plan.

That's incredible! Was it too tough working those looooong shifts?
