I suspect that most of the people who would patronize Hooters already (young college-aged guys) think most nurses are like that anyway.

Specializes in Acute Spine, Neuro, Thoracic's, LTC.
I don't understand why nurses get all upset and offended when nurses are portrayed "bad". It always annoyed me when nurses acted like only pure, virginal, angel like people were nurses. GIVE ME A BREAK!!!! I have seen tattoo wearing, harley riding, curse like a sailor nurses ,and they are good nurses. Give it a rest!!!

I second this!

Whats so bad about being sexy anyway!!

Op, I hear what you're saying; but I have to admit I enjoy a clever, well-thought out advertisement. Here's one from one of our local companies, one of a series flighted just before and during last year's FIFA world cup.

This is clever and funny, and although many women might find it offensive, I am not one of them. I thought it was a much bigger hoot (pun intended) than the groaner you showed us. :D

I'm somewhat amused and not personally offended by that ad. It's not the sexual portrayal itself in the Hooter's ad I'm objecting to. I'm objecting to that portrayal being associated with nursing.

Wow, I think the males in the video got most of the negative stereotyping here. Doesn't anyone else seem to notice that the "male nurse" and the "doctor" are portrayed as complete morons? And Dickie V, well there's not really anything left to be said about him.

The whole ad is meant to be stupid and campy. That's fine with me. Not that you don't have a point about the men looking particularly stupid. I'm only- and let me again specify only- objecting to the portrayal of the "naughty nurse" stereotype. But again- however you feel about it, thanks for chiming in.

I suspect that most of the people who would patronize Hooters already (young college-aged guys) think most nurses are like that anyway.

And giving an irresponsible company a free pass when they try to exploit such a demeaning stereotype will only reinforce that.

Whats so bad about being sexy anyway!!

Thanks for giving me an excuse to post this other link from the Center for Nursing Advocacy: :lol2:

thanks for daring to not side with the wave of indifference most of the first few responders have displayed. find further reading (long but very well-written) for those interested in finding out why nurses should be concerned about these types of portrayals here:

http://www.nursingadvocacy.org/faq/naughty_nurse.html

i actually read this, even though i fail to see the big deal about what amounts to a costume. they lost me with this quote:

"the center takes no position on the prevalence of sexual imagery in modern society. but we do object to the close association of that imagery with a traditionally female profession that must now fight through a critical shortage to keep millions of patients alive and on the road to recovery. in many cases, stereotypes do not simply go away of their own accord--they must be confronted and rejected. and the "naughty nurse" has proven its staying power for decades."

emphasis mine. talk about perpetuating a stereotype...critical shortage? really? tell that to the countless new grads and experienced nurses who can't find jobs. i know this is partially regional, but lately it is more regions than not. why not focus on something that is relevant, like that problem, or staffing ratios, or a standard entry into the profession, than to keep beating this dead horse. i have never seen a group of librarians get all upset about the "naughty librarian" image. come on, y'all, we have bigger fish to fry! (ok a little of the country coming out there, lol).

Specializes in ER.

eh, who cares. Really.

Unless you're stinkin' ugly.... then I guess you'd be offended that you'd be so OPPOSITE of this image. Haaa!!!

What do female doctors do when they're thought to be the nurse?? Do they stomp their feet and get all irked? No, they politely say "I'm Dr. So and so." This way is how we reform our positions, through what people see. Hold YOURSELF as a professional, keeping the image of nursing as you find it to be. There is no better way to dispel stereotypes than to be a professional and for a patient to witness what it is that we do. We will never truly be rid of stereotypes, just realize that. Sooner or later, we all need a nurse, so eventually.... EVENTUALLY everyone will come face to face with a nurse and realize what their purpose truly is. So let it go. It's like trying to tackle racism.

The nurse is smokin hot. I think some of you are jealous. It should make nurses proud that companies use nurses in advertising.

1) I am a skinny, white female.

2) I am saying that nurses get generalized as such, when in fact nurses can be: Man or woman; White, black, yellow, purple, green, orange, etc; gay or straight; etc, etc, etc

3) I did not say anything related to competency, I said this is what nurses are generalized as being.

4) Read and comprehend before you pull out your flame thrower.

Whatever. Anyone who doesn't live under a rock knows that modern American nurses are both men and women of many different ethnicities and backgrounds. Who cares what nurses are generalized as? Oh, and my reading comprehension is just fine, thanks though!

I think some of you are jealous.

Hate to say it but that's part of why some get their panties in such a twist over the naughty nurse bit. Who cares, really? Boycott Hooters if you feel so strongly about it.
