SAHM returning to work

Nurses General Nursing

Hi, I've been a SAHM for 5 years, my work experience includes working as a TCU nurse (10 months) and homecare (1 year). I would love to go back to nursing, but I have two small children and I don't know where to start. I was hoping to work in women's health (postpartum, labor/delivery), but I've noticed a lot of these jobs are mostly nights or full time. I also don't know if my lack of work experience will hinder me in getting the job I want. I feel a bit confused, can anyone help with feedback?

The first thing you need to do is check with your BON to see if there are any requirements associated with sitting out of the work force. In my state, after 4 years not working, you are required to take a refresher course.

Yes, I think your lack of experience coupled with the fact that you've sat out for 5 years will hinder you from getting the exact "perfect job." But I think you will still be employable. You just may have to compromise for a while on specialty, shift, number of hours per week, etc.

Thank you, this was very helpful. I just checked my state BON requirements and its 5 years or more. So I will have to re-register my nursing license and take the nurse refresher course. I found a community college that offers that course, so I'm feeling a lot better now that I have this information.

I have two small children and I have found working PRN has been the best option for my family. Maybe it's something you could look into

Hi, I've actually considered that before, the problem is my lack of experience. I think I would need more days to work to feel confident. If you don't mind me asking, what type of field do you work as PRN?
