...seems like we have been doing this about the same length of time, but not all of mine was in M/S. I still say forget this Ativan and keep them on Librium...it used to be very popular for alcoholics and I definitely think it helps keep them from acting out like this guy did for you the other nite. Yes, we know better than saying things are better tonite, but for some crazy reason, we still do it. I am about to return to M/S practice in one week...I have not worked as a staff nurse since I did agency this summer. I can't say I am looking forward to it as I know how difficult it is, but need the money. I had asked for ICU first and M/S second-knowing how difficult M/S is and I also knew better than to speak of my past experience....if one mentions M/S, no one is considering you for anything else. I hope I don't regret it...but, there will shifts that I will....that much, I feel certain.

Enjoy your weekend off....we are on Spring Break now and we are heading to the Ozarks Tuesday....YIPPPEEEEE!

Yes, Librium and ETOH gtts can be a Godsend! We started using ETOH gtts again about a year ago after trying a go without it, and things have gotten sooo much better with our ETOH'ers. Good luck next week- sending good vibes your way for when you go back to work!

ETOH GTTS are coming back in use?????? I wish we'd get them.

Why we do we kill ourselves and practically the patient to detox them? Alcohol drips for everyone!!!!!

Yep, we're using them again. It seems to have decreased our use of 4 point leathers, and has decreased seizure activity as well. Their alcohol protocol sheets show much better numbers, too. They just seem all-around more stable with the gtts and Librium than Ativan alone. Of course, we titrate it down daily.

I don't know why more Docs haven't returned to it. It certainly seems much safer than detoxing them with nothing. And it makes it safer for us, too- I got jacked in the jaw by a DT'er once. MJ, I feel your pain.

ETOH gtts?! Now why haven't OUR docs thought of that???? :o Seems like a small continuous dose of the "hair of the dog" could be just the thing these folks need to wean them off the sauce without sending them into full-blown DTs/seizures. I like Librium too, have used it in the past with W/D pts. and I thought it worked much better than Ativan. Actually, I like it best when the docs decide to ship them to the ICU for detox under Versed or propofol....... :chuckle

Of course, all of this folderol we go through with these pts. is too often such a waste of time, resources, blood, sweat and tears........I'm sure we'll see this fellow again soon....... :o

ETOH drips?????????????????? Wow !!! I've never heard of that one ! Interesting !

Be careful out there... can feel for ya, too. Had a BIG guy get me in a wicked headlock while in DTs back when I was a PCT in a chem. dependency facility awhile back.. he was seeing spiders all over his skin as well... I was assigned to do a one on one with him... well, we were "ONE" alright... dragged me down the entire length of the hall in that headlock before some others came to my aid.

Hope you got rested, friend. :kiss

Yup.......been out in the yard most of the afternoon digging in the dirt and planting shrubs, which is the cheapest and best therapy in the world for me :) Purposeful physical activity coupled with fresh air, sunshine, and making my world a little prettier relaxes me like nothing else on earth.....well, like *almost* nothing else on earth. ;)
