KristyBRN's thread on this topic is very interesting. She has heard that many RNs are first borns of alcoholic fathers. I thought we could use a quantitative poll on the subject.- *Please add any comment you wish, i.e. tell us if you are an only or first born.

Please choose the option that best describes you-

I clicked "not first born, neither parents alch". Though I was adopted so if you want to get technical I was the first born to my bio mum.

Although, odly enough, my dad's just started to become a bit alchy, he wasn't when I was growing up but ever since he moved in with his mistress he's hit the grog. And if you met her you'd see why.

She looks like the crypt keeper. Heheh.

All I have to say is OMG!!!! I checked the first box. Never thought about it before this poll.

I am the first born, I have one younger brother.

My parents were both non alcoholics.

First born, parents are not drunks... I love to be in control and take care of others however. I feel that when I am needed, my life is good...

thats me, first born, dad alcoholic, and to add to what some others have said mum- mental health issues too.

Specializes in Geri, psych, TCU, neuro--AKA LTC.

How about alcoholic father's first child ), OCD Mom's 3rd???

Dad was absent for most of my formative years- but I didn't go to nursing school til I was 33 tho. He was well resurfaced by then. I think my love of all things medical came from Mom's colitis which reared it's ugly head when I was in 5th grade. I was fascinated with learning more about how it (and everything else) worked.

second born (of two), neither parents alcoholics. is this a genuine poll? seriously? people actually believe that because their folks liked the sauce, it moved them towards nursing? c'mon...

High percentage of nurses have ETOH dep/drug (prescription pills) dep. parents, one or the other...it is a fact...

Not saying that is the reason they became nurses but it sure is plausible to me....they or I should say WE grew up taking care of siblings, parents, etc...being in charge of more than we should have been as young children...so naturally that would lead to nursing....we are all control freaks !! we are caregivers !!! See the relation now?????

First born, father no issues but mother mental illness

I am the youngest of 5. Neither of my parents drank alcohol but Dad was a doctor and Mom was a nurse so I guess medicine was in my blood.

Interesting poll! Personally I am the baby of the family and my father was a binge alcoholic.

First Born, RN (only one in my entire family) and oh , yes, alcoholic father to put it lightly.
