Not sure about your state, but Texas is in the process of trying to get all nurses in TX fingerprinted. They are doing it randomly, and will notify the nurse prior to their renewal date.

I'm in Cali, no you don't need to get your prints done again. Heads up, it's faster if you pay online, one of my coworkers sent snail mail and couldn't work for a week because his license lapsed.

Every healthcare worker is fingerprinted I guess to make sure you havent got a criminal record.

In the UK we didnt do this either

They fingerprint everyone before NCLEX. In Mass, you don't have to get re-fingerprinted but they have your fingerprints in some kind of database from the original time. It seems like a colossal waste of money to have people do fingerprints with renewals though... your fingerprints don't change.

I understand that fingerprints are 'catching' many previously unreported felons from years past who were flying under the radar & others who have not yet reported arrests & such that occurred since last license renewal. There is also potential for technology that would use fingerprint scanning as an electronic signature for patient care records (new can of worms entirely) Now, if we could only bring all the "C- suite" (CEO, CFO & such) in on the same process - LOL.

Also catches people who try to get a license under someone else's name posing as a move, change of name with marriage, etc.

Interesting, because Canadian nurses are not fingerprinted either.
