Reference(s) for New Nurse?

I hope to get a job on the Medical Surgical floor as a new grad (I have an interview next week) My question is what are some good references to take to work with you, or what is your favorite thing that you take to work with you? I know most floors have reference books on them, but just curious??? Thanks

My 2 biggies are Taber's & Davis' drug guide - both on my PDA.

We've had to start setting pt goals for the day, too (only for JACHO, sadly...), so I've started brining my nursing diagnosis book (from school) into work with me too. I've also thought about brining in my med/surg text just to re-read the patho of some disease processes.

If you haven't invested in a PDA, then it would be a smart move. Keep phone numbers of physicians offices, other numbers and fax number you will need in a hearbeat.

I have used several programs in the past, but downloading a pharmacy and med surg program would be handy.

The PDA has a screen you can scratch down what bed number wants meds, etc. Some have alarms that can be set to beep to help you remember to give a med...

You can also keep up with your schedule on the PDA.

Also, take a spare ink pens, mark them so you can easily recognize your pen as they vanish in thin air.

A web site that has tons of info is WWW.CNS.GOV, look for manuals. There is a ton of information on Medicare/Medicaid. As you probably realize, Medicare is the driving force of healthcare. The rules they adopt generally spread to other insurance companies.

You will wonder why the hospital have procedures/policies and enforce certain rules. This website will give you some justification and keep you out of the dark.
