Hi, I have been a nurse (BSN) for just about two years now, and while I still consider myself a "baby nurse" I think I have had ample time to feel out what nursing entail outside of the academic structure. In highschool I had hopes of going to medical school, but My grades were average and I was discouraged by many a family member. Now that I have begun my career as an RN I am feeling disappointed with my efforts and overall disatisfied.

I am reaching out to any nurses who have been in a similar situation. I am 23 and feel that I still have time to go to medical school if I really put my all into it. My biggest concerns revolve around the logistics of returning to school. I no longer have the luxury of being single and living on campus with little to worry about but my grads. I have a husband and a full time job and a mortgage to pay for.

I guess what I am asking is for anyone who has gone down this road, how did you do it? Is it possible to remain part time as an RN while attending medical school? Do you even think it is worth it in my situation? I don't want to be a nurse. I can see that now. But I hope to stay in the medical field and I need to prove to myself that I have what it takes to earn my MD. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I don't think anyone else can determine what's "worth it" for someone else. If you know you don't want to be a nurse, then do what you can to get where you want to me. There are days that I regret leaving the medical school program I was in, but I know I wouldn't have my current life or family if I had gone that route, and I would still be paying off the medical school bills. So, I'll be happy in an APRN role when I finish school. You're young, work for what you want and the rest will work itself out. Good luck.

If you were an average student with no "grown-up" responsibilities, a reality check is definitely in order. Pre-nursing (and nursing) is much less strenuous than pre-med and medical school, from what I understand. Student doctor network has a "what are my chances" forum. Maybe stop by there and check it out?
