so i'm at clinical today working on post-partum and the patient's husband asked if he can lay down in the bed to try on scd's ! i was totally shocked and didn't know how to respond. i didn't want to respond too rude but at the same time i didn't want him to try them on ! i told him that i'm not going to tell him what he can and and can't do, but those are really for the mom. later i asked my instructor how she would respond and she busted out laughing, she said she's never heard of someone doing that before. i admitted to her that i didn't know what to say to him because i didn't expect a grown man, to asked me such thing... maybe a child but not a grown man who just became a dad. :uhoh3: anyway, after my instructor told me that, i went to the room to tidy up things and the first thing i removed was those scd's so that dad wouldn't get tempted. :lol2:

but if that wasn't enough to surprise he does something else ! he asked me and my instructor what it takes to be a nurse because he thinks he wants to become an ob nurse. once again shocked ! however i did talk c- him and gave him some pointers.

then when i thought he could'nt surprise me anymore... i catch him sitting down while his wife who just had a c-section less than 24hrs ago was standing up next to him rubbing his head ! i went to my instructor and the nurse to report this and they told me to get some extra chairs to take in. i wanted to tell him so bad " get your lazy but up and let your wife have a seat and rest. goodness sakes she just had major abd. surgery!"

well you gotta love'em. maybe dad just didn't get too much attention and needed a lil' tlc from his student nurse. :icon_roll:redpinkhe

haha... people are so weird.

I tried on the SCDs in one of my training classes after putting them on and taking them off of other people for a year :) Kinda like a leg massage....

I don't see anything wrong with letting him try on the SCDs. People are curious about the things that are happening to their loved ones in the hospital. Sounds like he provided you with several opportunities to practice your patient teaching skills.

you never know, maybe she wanted to stand up and rub his head. maybe she wanted him to chill out a little and quit bothering the nursing student with dumb requests. she needed to be out of that bed anyway, so she wouldn't need those scds anymore.

the 2nd-to-last night i was in the hospital after my third kid (third c-section), i threw my husband out of the recliner and made him sleep in the bed. my back couldn't handle that dam* bed anymore! the nurse came in on rounds, woke him up and asked him about it. he was swearing i made him sleep in the bed when i woke up and confirmed his story. she was ready to read him the riot act!

the moral of the story...patients and families are goofy. get used to it!

Sorry for my obvious ignorance. We don't have such things in the nursing home, but I am curious. What are SCDs?

Take this as a positive. You were entertained for the day. You can't stop people from being nutty so enjoy it. I know I enjoyed the story. Thanks.

The velcro pads that go around a patients calf and gently vibrate with intermittant pressure to prevent a DVT from breaking off.

Sequential Compression Devices, stockings that wrap around the legs with velcro and a machine pumps air into them and releases. The compression is to help prevent blood clots (DVTs).

Some people just like to do weird things and continue to do weird things until you cry Uncle, crack up laughing, or get mad. I've had some pretty entertaining individuals just try to see which nurses they could crack and which they determined were just sourpusses. Then again--some people are just weird, and some are just curious. Your patient's husband sounds more like a weirdo but maybe I've been working with the public too long. LOL

but the nurse and my instructor told me that she needed to sit and to ask dad to get up right away. yes being oob is good for her to prevent dvt and to get her passing gas but she shouldn't be standing for a long period of time.

yes i agree, they can be goofy but you gotta love em ! i had a very entertaining day today. :D

I had a baby two weeks ago... after sleeping on that stupid bed for 2 nights in a row I too made my husband switch with me. The heck of it is the pullout chair thing wasn't any better.:icon_roll
