I was hoping I could get some opinions on whether or not I should go to work tomorrow. 3 weeks ago I started developing cold like symptoms. It got pretty bad so I went to the doctor a week later and was diagnosed with walking pneumonia. I was prescribed Z-pack (2 weeks ago) A few days later I noticed white patches on my tonsils. My doctor told me the 5 day Z-pack would treat it. The white patches just started going away a few days ago. BUT for a few days now I've had a pretty bad sore throat which I simply attributed to post nasal drip. But tonight I looked at my throat and the white patches are back again on my tonsils, my uvula, and the back roof of my mouth. On top of that my tongue is sore with a whitish yellowish coating. (I don't use a steroid inhaler). Needless to say I'm going back to the Dr. My dilemma is that I started orientation today for a new job and am supposed to go to work tomorrow morning as well. I'm concerned that if I still have strep throat that it would not be appropriate for me to go to work tomorrow. I want to start off this job with the best impression as possible. So I'm thinking of going in to work in the morning and explaining to my DON the situation and leave it up to her if she wants me to stay. I don't want to come across as unreliable, but I don't want to put residents at risk either. The plus side is that my first 2 days of orientation are pretty much shadowing, so its not like they would be down a person. So what would you all do? Any advice greatly appreciated.

I'd tell your boss and go to a doctor to be on the safe side.

Consult with your PCP. Strep is highly contagious and one cannot work until 24 hours post initiation of antibiotic therapy.

However you asked what to do about work. I would go into work and speak to the facility and follow their suggestions. I would also follow up with you PCP.
