PA just passed that it will be a none smoking state and resturants and bars have to comply within 2 years!! :balloons: WOOOHOOOO:balloons:

Congratulations ! Welcome to our world ! :)

Theres gonna be some rather cranky people and the bar owners will be complaining that business is dying but in about a year after the complete ban...things will settle.

California hasn't allowed smoking in bars or restaurants for years. Compliance was sketchy at first, especially in bars, but a few stiff fines meted out and facility closures have improved that situation considerably. Any time I travel to a "smokers' rights" state, for lack of a better term, it amazes me what a wonderful difference this law makes. And really, given what is known about the dangers of second hand smoke, this is actually a no brainer.

We have non-smoking laws around here too. When I go to places that don't have it I always get a little surprised when they ask "smoking or nonsmoking?" at the restaurants. It's so nice not to have to worry about it, because even in those nonsmoking sections, we all share the air and I can still smell it.

I just moved from Columbus, Ohio and everything there is now non smoking!:) I moved to Cincinnati, Ohio and some rest. are non smoking but some arent...oh well...soon enough! My thoughts to those reluctant states...if NYC can do it, any state can do it!!! It bothers me when I go to a restaurant/bar and when I come home I can smell cigarette smoke all over me, in my hair, my clothes, everywhere! ew..and i dont even smoke!

as a smoker, I totally understand the feelings of non-smokers and do not smoke in public or around others that do not smoke. I don't like smoke interfeering with my meal so I do not smoke at eating places even when it is allowed. There is a time and place for my needs and they should not infringe on others needs. Everyone has most certinally joined this bandwagon and as a supporter of this ideal, I would suggest that smoking is only one of the offenders in this tale. I can't tell you the numerous times I have been in a public place and had to leave due to the amount of cologne I am surrounded by and the offenders would never consider themselves offensive. Cleaning solutions, hairspray, body sprays, deoderizers, etc. These all affect me in a very negative way...nausia, headache, difficulity breathing, sometimes disorentation. I would never walk into someone's home and light up a cigerette, but people have no problem coming to my home even doused in the stuff and come over to hug me. The people that I know do know this about me and the people that I do not know ....in public do not. However I am not alone in this it is much more of a problem than most people would want to give it credit for because it would infringe on their rights to wear what ever disgusting fragrance they choose and stand next to me at a gathering or eat next to me in a public place and I am infringed upon but somehow that is my problem. I have heard from people I work with "Well, you know she doesn't like the smell of this" duh! that's like saying a diabetic doesn't like the taste of sugar. I want to say" you moron, educate yourself, if you want to live next to people in this world". This is not a personal preference, it's a matter of my health. But that doesn't seem to matter because I smoke and if you smoke then you should not have a problem with something else. I know I have gotten off of the subject and that this has gotten long and disjointed. I have just wanted to say this out loud so often and have not found the right place to get the message across. We all do things that bother others some more dangerously than others. We all have the responsibility to learn about these things and do what we can to respect the rights of others. THanks for letting me ramble.

Illicit drugs are illegal. That's what makes them illicit. Alcohol abuse that puts anyone else in harm's way is also against the law. Smoking isn't banned because it annoys anyone, it is banned because second hand smoke is a known carcinogen, and smokers have no constitutional freedom to expose others to this danger. Noise pollution is also illegal. This is why there are local ordinances defining when annoying noise becomes pollution. Even bratty kids can be prosecuted when the behavior escalates to where it causes physical or property damage.

I wasn't sugesting we outlaw anything. I was only asking for consideration from alot of people who want consideration shown to them. And for people to think a little broader than just what effects them.
