Just lost my second R.N. job. I made a med error and reported it. It was a really stupid error...I gave darvocet off someone else's card instead of darvon in a totally distracted moment. They fired me the next day after only one month on the job. I lost my first position after being passed through six preceptors, receiving a good evaluation in which the floor manager said that there were only good reports about my work and personality. I was called into the office two weeks later by the lower floor manager to be told that I was not fitting in and let go during the middle of my shift. My sixth preceptor kept laundry lists of any misstep that I made and reported it to this manager. I feel like I am a total failure and that all of the years of school were for nothing. That is on my bad days...lots of them lately!!!

You will be fine. Just try to remain positive. Just don't put this most recent position on your resume when you apply somewhere next.

I'm sorry.

You need to take a good self-evaluation, but keep words like "failure", "waste of time" out of it because that's not true.

Hang in there.

I am sorry. I agree with Tweety. Self-reflection, NOT bashing, is key to your moving on and in a positive direction.

Re: med errors: A majority of them are made d/t multiple system failures = a system problem, needing to be addressed by admin/TPTB.

Agree with the other posters, keep going. :)

I'm so sorry. As Tweety said, reflect on changes you need to make, but don't beat yourself up over this.

It's always so frustrating to hear that nurses are getting fired over med errors. The facility needs to use this to evaluate their system, which are more than likely very flawed, not punish nurses who make mistakes in it.

There is agency work that gives you one on one cases

so there would not be a problem with distraction

like there is in facilities.
