I am almost an RN, But I want to become a midwife. What is the difference between the work that I would do with my BSM and the work that I would do as a SNM? and how much schooling does it take on top of RN to become a SNM? Or if I chose to ignore my RN degree, What is the best flat out aprouch to becoming a midwife? my ultimate goal is to volenteer internationally, with the choice to practice in the states.

I don't know what a BSM or SNM are.

In the US, in order to be a midwife who practices in a hospital, you must be a CNM (certified nurse midwife) and to become a CNM, you must complete a master's program in midwifery. There are many schools who offer that.

If you are an RN, it will take about 3-4 years to complete the schooling to get your master's degree in midwifery, depending on if you go to school fulltime or parttime, and if you have an ADN or BSN.

To the OP - could you explain the abbreviations? And...what country are you in?

To RNPinky - this has been discussed in the the midwifery advanced practice forum. You might want to look there as well as the International Forum. I know several midwifes from the UK have tried to come to the US and practice but it seems as though there are some extra classes/hours that are needed.
