i am starting a new position in 3 days and know that chances of doing overtime will be limited during my 3 month er orientation. in preparation for lesser hours, i signed up to work with 2 agencies. that was 4 weeks ago. i am yet to work a shift with any of these agencies. each morning, i wake up with "they wouldn't need you at macneal today" or whatever other hospital they signed me up to work in.

i know with time, i'll be able to work w/an agency who will send me to a couple of hospitals on a regular basis especially when i get tele experience. while waiting for that day to come, i wanted to see if anyone knows of odd nursing jobs that are not the traditional supplemental work (agency or registry) that rns can go into. any other untapped section of nursing that most rns don't know about. any other field that could use an rn where i can find guaranteed part time positions?

right now, agency and registry are a last resort as my ideal part position won't be as stressful as my regular job

any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. thank you in advance!

You could try subbing as a school nurse if they have sub positions at a district close to you. I know in my district when I call in sick, I NEVER get a sub, so maybe other districts need subs too. You may also qualify as a sub teacher if you are interested in that kind of thing, usually you only need a college degree and some training, and you are pretty much guaranteed to get work when you want it. Might help prevent burnout from nursing too?

Lol, I was gonna say that exact same thing, school nurse sub. Also, sometimes they need prn lab instructors in our town. Also, don't forget, some nursing homes and such will hire you prn without going through an agency. You can't do that if you have been there for the agency, but since you haven't....

It's also possible that your hospital may need some prn or part-timers in home health care. And you might want to check out the local hospice agency, and organ donor agency. And the public health department. Where I used to live, about 90 miles away from me was a pediatric vent specialty agency who happened to cover my area. I only found it by accident as, strangely, they only advertised where they were based, not in the area they needed nurses. There could be something like that where you live. Are you close to any summer camps? Big swimming beaches or theme parks? Those all use nurses.

Hope that helps!
