Nursing vs. Accounting.

Nurses General Nursing

I know that I can't get career advice of a message board, but I wanted to know what posters thought. First of all, I am a high school math teacher and very unsatisfied, which I have been since I started. I have been a high school math teacher for 7 years. I don't like that there is very little opportunity for advancement, and your success depends upon your students success. So it doesn't really matter how hard you work, if your students are willing to work hard, then your success is limited.

My other career choice before I decided to be a teacher was a nurse. I have heard that Nursing is very similar to teaching in a lot of ways. Such as, huge, unrealistic workload. Physical job, Assessments, and very hard job. This is why I am shying away from Nursing.

I also think that I would like to go into accounting. It has a lot to do with math, and is goal oriented. I am a hard worker, which I think would serve me well in accounting. My success with completely depend upon my work ethic, no one else could effect my success. I like the idea of setting and meeting goals and having opportunity for advancement. I think accounting would work well with this.

I know it is weird for someone to be deciding betwen accounting and nursing, since they are so different. What does everyone else think?

You might want to look at actuarial science if you have an interest in mathematics.

Do you want to spend your day around numbers or people?

I'd go with the accounting, become a CPA and start your own business.

You can charge $175 for a 1040 for just filling in a few blanks on the computer program, even more for corporate returns, etc.

It is very difficult to find a job right now in accounting. I'm leaving the field for nursing so I speak from experience. Companies don't need someone to count their beans where there are no beans to count. I do not think it is strange at all that you are considering two such disparate fields. People have all kinds of reasons why different things appeal to them and if you feel it's right to be in nursing then it's right. Good luck to you!

I actually just left the accounting field for nursing. You can read some of my past posts. I was laid off 4 times in one year!!

I was an accounting major! After the second week I stopped going to class LOL. I hated it. I'm in nursing school now and I love it! :)

I'd choose nursing. I took two days of an accounting class and dropped out..couldn't stand it. I love nursing though. There is a lot of problem solving involved which appeals to me. Depending on what area of nursing you go into, your patient interaction will be limited, or so I'm told. My pharmacology teacher told us (her class) in the beginning of the quarter that she worked ICU because she preferred her patients to be asleep so she didn't have to talk to them. There are a lot of options in the nursing field, and job security, good benefits, etc. With the economy I'd be afraid to go into accounting. But thats just my two cents, and I may be a bit naive.

That's exactly why I'm thinking of ICU :D I'm in still in school, but I'm planning ahead lol.

I have a BA in accounting & am currently in nursing school....can't find any good jobs in my original field. Good luck in your decision!

I am a CPA and an RN. My first career was accounting and I loved it, but after 20 or so years I decided I wanted to try something different that was more rewarding so I went into nursing. Yes, nursing is way more physical and a way less professional. Money wise...I dunno...I know some CPAs that make half a milion a year, but their lives are a mess, but starting out, you will be making less then a new grad RN. How little free time do you want? As a CPA you work a lot, esp during tax season. Also its a LOT harder to become a CPA. You read here about people freaking out over the NCLEX. It does not compare to the CPA exam. The CPA exam was about 100 times harder, no exaggeration. You will find many folk in accounting have gone into nursing.
