Nursing as second career

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I am relocating from Northeast to Ft. Lauderdale. At 45, I intend to go back to school for a second career. Am I too old for nursing school / career? I've heard there is a shortage of nurses, but everything I read indicates that it is very difficult to find nursing jobs (entry level) in Florida. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You are not too old. And by the time you graduate there will probably be a shortage again.

I just graduated from an adn program at the age of 41 and started work in a NICU. So no, I don't think you're too old.

I completely agree with the above posters. I am also doing nursing as a second career. I just want to add, if you already have at least a 4 yr degree from another field, you may want to look into an Accelerated BSN program, if your interested in going further with Nursing, such as management, etc..

I too was a bit worried when I saw the posts on here about the so-called shortage, but I'm sticking to it, as I've always wanted to work in the Heathcare field since High School. I'm looking at this as my second chance to fulfill my dream. Good luck.

you're never too old. I started nursing at age 54.

With a good financial plan to pay for school, energy, a willingness to start over as a beginner, and determination to succeed, you will do fine.

I would recommend doing some research into nursing before you start to make sure this is the career change you really want.
