Nurses Humiliated, Demeaned by Hospital Boot Camp: Complaint - Joliet IL Patch

According to the INA, boot camp activities included requiring nurses to drink water without access to bathrooms, sitting on a patient care bed in a public hallway while wearing goggles to mimic poor vision and headphones to simulate a patient with poor hearing, all while on top of a bedpan for 30 minutes.

One nurse who participated in the alleged forced boot camp said the program consisted of having nurses drink a bottle of water and then not being allowed to urinate, lie on a backboard with a c-collar in place while being accidentally” banged into doors and walls by a member of leadership, or sit in a Hall of Reflection” reading insults that patients have said about the staff.

This is insane and very abusive 😡

Here's an idea, spend the money on more staffing instead of useless crap like this!

I have seen hospitals and SNFs hire new nurses only to then fill in for staff that call off or transfer to other units. So hiring more nurses isn't the answer unless they can keep them. Maybe nurses should go on strike ,that really hits Healthcare Administrators below the belt ! Then they will realize just how important their nurses are needed. I realize that some places can not strike. I don't know what the solution is but something has got to be done ! Or patients will suffer in the long run or maybe not even want to go to the hospital !

Or...just walk out!!! I'd have to be on the brink of homelessness to put up with such treatment at a place of employment.

NObody...NO ONE EVER...anywhere should have to be humiliated in the name of their "job" There is something inherently wrong with that. Y'all have earned and deserve so much more.

If I was a patient whose commentary had been used to fuel this boot camp, I would be livid. Maybe it's a bit of misguided idealism on my part, but I sincerely hope that most people would not wish these experiences on those who are doing their best to care for them. Maybe if the patients themselves demanded more adequate staffing, management would actually consider it.
