Nurses and Loan Repayment/Forgiveness/Assistance

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I've been doing a bit of research and trying to compile a list of forgiveness/assistance programs for nursing loans. So far, I've only found:

10 year public service/120 payments option

HRSA (I need to look into this more clearly....I love the hospital that I'm at and I think it qualifies for this but I don't know if I have to go where HRSA says or if I could stay)

Military

Please don't take this as someone asking for all of their debt to be forgiven, I knew what I signed up for. However, the economy has changed; long gone are the days of employers offering loan repayment options to nurses (or a sign on bonus) and nurses having a job right after they graduate. Just trying to see if there are any options out there and if so, see if I qualify. My financial aid office was really no help.

if u have a federal loan, u can request for a loan deferment for upto 3 years. you wouldn't have to pay and your interest does not accrue. if u don't qualify for a deferment, u can apply for a forebearance. you can choose not to pay, partial payment, but your loan will continue to accrue interest.

hope that helps

It was never forgivness, it was incentive. Just having a job now is incentive enough

I've applied for HRSA before and have known other people to apply as well. I hear that it is difficult to be selected for that program. You can work at any hospital as long as it meets their criteria and you have to provide a letter from the facility that you work at. The website is www.hrsa.gov. The military is also an option (I'm looking into it now as well). They do repay a good amount of your loans and also offer bonuses. But this may not be the right track for everyone; the military lifestyle does not suit everyone. From reading on the Government nursing forum, it is now very competitive to get into the military as well. If you're thinking about this route I would go on there and read some of the post. They have been really helpful to me.

I think someone was also telling me about VA Hospitals also having a program....GL :)
