NJ colleges for nursing?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I live in New Jersey. Im 17 years old and a senior in high school. Im looking at colleges in NJ and im not sure which has a good nursing program. My scores arent that great. I took the SAT's twice and got 1260 (tell me how thats possible!?) and my GPA is a 3.3 out of 4. Im class rank 70 out of 165 as well.

I really want to be accepted into William Paterson University because its convenient and seems to have a good nursing program. Then the other colleges I want to go to seem like such a stretch because of my bad SAT scores. I was looking at Ramapo, Georgian Court University, Richard Stockton, Fairleigh Dickinson- Metropolitan Area, and thats pretty much it. I shot down Rutgers & Seton Hall because I dont want to waste my time applying when I know I cant get in.

Do you think I have the potential to make it into any of the colleges I looked over?

Im also a bit confused about Georgian Court's system. They have a nursing program at the Women's College. What does that mean though? there are ONLY women there? that kind of sucks if you ask me because I want the men!! lol

but please give me your insight and the truth. thanks

Why not apply? I'm not sure how much the application process cost, but keep your options wide open. You never know until you try. By just a few of those colleges that you listed, you want to go for your BSN. My advice, take a tour of the colleges your very interested in and speak to the Directors of each Nursing Program, be proactive about that. Good luck in your career choice.

Also look at Drexal U ? You could get in there. I think you will get in where you aapply . Also referrals and volunteer work always looks great.

It might surprise you to know that sometimes when the tuition is higher there are more option and student aide and you will only be paying instate fees when the aide comes though it most like will less or not even that amount.

NJ has excellent Colleges: ) Also look at the New Jersey State College or is still called Trenton State ?

Hudson County Community College has a great 2-year program where you get your diploma in nursing and associate's in science. You take your core classes at Hudson and you go to nursing school either at Christ Hospital School or Nursing or Bayonne Medical Center's school. Christ Hospital SON just won the NLN "center of excellence in nursing education" award. I'm currently a student there and the program is wonderful. Oh and the best part is that the whole 2-year program, including classes at Hudson only costs $23,000. Much cheaper than univeristy!

there is no way I can get into Drexel. My sat scores are really low .. 1260 out of 2400 :(

and i have no money for college so id be taking out alot of loans

Did you know you can study and retake your SAT over and over again or Take the ACT Test well at least it was that way two years ago.

Mercer County Community College is Great Program.

If your score are low you might want to see what remedial Classes would help

to increase your scores and there are free review Remedial Class 100 level at some colleges and there even courses you could audit for free online that are from excellant Colleges. istudysmart is a program you would have to pay for.

IF your score are low you should take a some 100 level courses,Set your self up for success and then it will come easier for you in the long run:)

Did you ever really study for the SAT?

I think you need to talk to a College Counselor for Free at your local community college. ( That is your state Tax Dollars at work) They will be honest and offer you test to see where you are at on the basic College entrance of 101 or 100. The SAT and ACT were made for a very good reason and tend to be pretty good on how successful your first Year of College will be. If it takes you one more term or one more year to to get into the College you really want believe me it will be worth your time. Did your HS have a College Counselor?

I wish you All the best in the world ! Usually to get the best you have to be prepared for the best when opporunity comes knocking at your door in life in general. That is what Oprah has verbalized over and over again.

The old Trenton State College became the College of New Jersey over 10 years ago. They do have a very good nursing program, also, and are a very competetive college to get in to.

Do you have other things that would look good on a college app. that could balance out a lower SAT score? Things such as extra-curriculars, honors/AP classes, volunteer work that could make you stand out as an applicant? Discuss your options with your guidance counselor and see what they suggest. They should be able to look over your profile and determine which colleges you would have the best chances of getting into.

Drexal has CO OP

Many Colleges offer Co OP

The Christ Hospital program is excellent - the faculty are very knowledgable and supportive, there are lots of resources to help you, and plenty of clinical time. It's hard work and a LOT of work/studying, but it's worth it. As far as I know, the bayonne program is very similar in that it follows the same curriculum, as they are both linked to HCCC. I can only truly speak for Christ Hospital, but I highly recommend the program though HCCC.
