Hello there ,

I have recently started a new job . I am on 3rd week my orientation . My orientation is around 10 weeks.Due to some family reason, I must have to go my country at least for 3- 4 weeks . But I haven't talk to my manager yet because I am scared that it will be very inappropriate and have a fear of being fired from job. I am planning to talk to her after my orientation is over . Do you think its appropriate to discuss about the leave for 4 weeks after orientation.

Please share your ideas. I must go to my country within next 2 months and in a same time I don't want to lose my job .

If you are in the US, it is very unusual to be allowed to take 3-4 weeks off, particularly right after orientation. Unheard of, I would actually say.

If it is essential that you leave the country, I think it is only fair that you notify your employer now - not after finishing orientation. That would be the professional way to handle it.

Depending on what the situation is you may be able to take some sort of leave but I wouldn't count on it. I'd speak with your manager sooner than later but be ready to choose between your job and your personal life. Good luck!

Thank you everyone for your help . Is it Ok to ask for leave after working 5-6 months on the floor ?

Again, that type of leave does not usually happen in the US unless you take a leave of absence. Any leave time would likely not be considered until you have worked for at least one year. These things are facility-specific so I am just guessing. FMLA (to protect your position) is only granted after one year's worth of hours worked, I believe. Even then it is usually only 12 weeks (possible to extend under certain circumstances.)

What I am curious about is the fact that your "necessary" leave can be moved around. At first you needed it soon after orientation ended. Now you're asking about 4 or 5 months after orientation. Either you have a family emergency or you don't.

I'm also afraid that you are working in this country under a false set of expectations of flexibility in your employment. As has been mentioned in another thread reacently, the US does not have the same "guaranteed" vacation time as most European countries seem to.

I do have family emergency and I am not making up. Please don't get me wrong. I came to know about this situation once I started this job.So at this point I really don't know what to do and what not to do . I am wondering how soon I can ask for a leave(unpaid) and for how long I can ask at a time ?

Thank you all..

Only your facility can answer that. Perhaps ask HR?

I wasn't doubting your family emergency. I just didn't understand how the timing of it could move around.

I would be absolutely shocked if any facility gave a new hire 3-4 weeks off for anything.

Our policy is a max of 10 days off at a time. As a vacation. Unless you get FMLA.

If you get that leave, factor in the animosity of the nurses who have to carry your load while you're gone.

I agree with roser 13. Notifying your boss immediately that you need those weeks off, is the fair and professional thing to do.

I think you already know what will happen if you do. Otherwise you would have already asked.

You need to consult with your employer ASAP. Your employer may say no and permit you to resign if you must leave for 4 weeks. Most employers require a year of full time service before considering granting paid or unpaid leave. Waiting until after orientation is not likely to be beneficial.

That's a tricky spot to be in :(

I would truly, honestly evaluate the situation and your need (not want) to go back home and be present for whatever your family emergency is. If someone close to you is dying or something like that and this will be the last time you see them...ask your employer and if they say no, weigh your options and the possible consequences and make a decision that you can live with.

If a family member is hospitalized, remember that although of course we want to be near them and let them know we are there, most of the time what you'll be doing is sitting..in the hospital/at the bedside.

Reevaluate your situation. Only you can make the right choice for you.

Do you mind sharing the circumstances of the family emergency? I think we could give better opinions (if you feel comfortable in doing so).

Death/life threatening: probably

Wedding: no

Not sure what your definition of emergency is.....

I'd rather have you leave now then finish out orientation. If they by some reason would allow you to have this leave, you'd need some on boarding time when you get back more $$$. It would be hard to apply all you learned in orientation when you leave right after orientation is finished. Be open and honest with them as soon as possible and possibly you could defer your orientation until after you get back. If you must resign you'd would be in better standing now then if you do it at the end of orientation.
