New Grad..Kind of

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I graduated with an ADN in December 2015. Since then I became employed (Feb, 2016) and was in the middle of new nurse orientation (May 2016) when I broke my ankle, had bimalleolar surgery, and was released from the program due to extended recovery time expectancy. I have been working through my RN to BSN, It is now December 2016, I am willing and able to get back into the field but cannot get a call back from applications for employment. I am thinking I will need to change majors since I am not having any luck with finding employment now. Are there degree programs that closely parallel nursing that I could switch to? This just breaks my heart...

Where are you applying? Have you expanded your job search beyond the hospital environment? Unfortunately you do have the fact that you've got only a few months experience and an employment gap that are going to be obstacles, but if you're willing to compromise and work in any area even if it isn't your first choice you've still got a chance.

Specializes in Hospital medicine; NP precepting; staff education.

That is unfortunate but explainable. Good luck in your future endeavors.

I have been applying to every position that I can find for GN/residency type positions. There will be more coming up in January that I can apply for so I haven't given up, but I like to be prepared in case I need to choose another route. Thank you, for your input.

You may need to move beyond new grad residency programs. You may not even qualify for them as you have already worked on a floor and that may be why you aren't being called for interviews.

Specializes in M/S, LTC, Corrections, PDN & drug rehab.

I would definitely apply to any & every job that you think you qualify for, even out of the hospital. Not just that but you probably don't qualify for a new grad residency program since you already have some work experience.
