Being nervous is nothing to be ashamed off!

Nearly 22 years ago I walked into a general orientation for the hospital I still work at. I took one look at the crowd in the room (it was a brand new hospital, so orientation was HUGE) and started to hyperventilate! It looked like there were more people in that room than who worked at my old hospital - I came from a very small hospital!

I got to the registration desk - the person asked my name and I'm there 'Um Pepper. Pepper something" and that was it. They figured out who I was, got me to where I was suppossed to be and I just followed them hyperventilating and saying "oh big mistake, big mistake" because all I could think was that I was crazy to leave my small hospital and move over 500 miles to a new job! They had to get me some water, got my soon -to-be manager come and talk to me and calm me down! In retrospect its very funny - at the time not so much!

anyway - it was the best move of my life. I still work there - and while its not perfect (what job is??) I love it.

So - Good Luck! And you know what - everyone in the room will probably be scared and nervous! That is what else I learned from my experience!

Smile and nod... smile and nod.. try to remember some names. Everybody will introduce themselves .. and welcome you.

Your biggest challenge in this first week is to (appear ) confident.

Yes... you are making your first impression.... make it easier on yourself by taking mental notes and write down YOUR first impressions when you get home.

I promise you.. in 3 months when you read your journal , you will have a good handle on all the peeps you were trying to impress.

Breathe! Keep us posted.

CONGRADULATIONS!!! Be who you are! You trained hard for this, you ARE prepared! You WILL do this WELL!! PEACE, LOVE,JOY!! Carry it with you! Katie

Congrats! I'm sure you'll do well. Just remember to smile, stand tall, keep your head up, and say hi to others; oh yeah, and breathe! ;) Chances are that everyone else will be as (or more) nervous than you are...so starting conversation can put you and the other(s) as ease. Good luck!
