Need opinions for Nursing system !

Nurses General Nursing

Hi. I am a foreign RN to BSN nursing student.

I have a question and need your opinion.

I think Team nursing is the best among Case method, Functional nursing, Team nursing, Primary nursing, and Case management, and actually have worked with this system (Team nursing) when I was nurse in Japan.

I want to know other opinion. Please post your opinion whatever you have either good points and bad points.

Thank you very much.

I do not like team nursing, I like primary nursing. I like being responsible for all my patients, doing their assessments, checking their labs, passing their meds. I'm very territorial about my patients.

I've tried team nursing, where I had 20 patients with 2 LPN's and 2 aids under me. It was a disaster! The LPN's didn't do as I instructed on 2 occasions - both could have been deadly for the patient, but the fact that I didn't trust them worked to my benefit - the patient with blood hanging didn't get VS for over 30 min (I stayed with the patient the first 15 min per protocol) and the other patient became unresponsive after the LPN didn't keep up with frequent vital signs. I ended up nearly quitting at the end of the day. I went to the DON an told her "I WILL NOT do team nursing again" it only works if you are truly a "team", since I was a float nurse - I didn't really "belong" anywhere.

So many errors were made during the team nursing trial, some quite serious, we went back to primary nursing, and it has stayed that way since.
