i am a nursing student who is fixing to graduate in may with my LVN. i would really like to get into the OR as a nurse. i would love to assist in as many surgeries as possible! does anyone know how that is possible and what are some of the steps that i need to take to get there? i am very clueless so any information would help! thank you so much!:redbeathe

It all depends on where you live and work.

Up here in Canada, OR nursing is a specialty and a distance ed course and then a clinical placement is required to gain the OR designation on our practice permit. I also believe that you are required to have some work experience prior to gaining the certification.

There may be similar courses in your area.

The issue is for LPNs scrubbing is cost. From what I remember you need your RN to circulate. So you can only scrub. Most places the LPN salary is higher than the CST salary so they are the defacto scrubs (for those places that are not all RN).

Searching LPN and Operating room will bring up a few threads on this.

When I was attending clinical rotations at Kaiser Hospital in the Los Angeles area during my time in the VN program, I noticed that some of the OR techs were LVNs. This was back in 2005.

However, you'll have a much easier time entering this specialty (or any other specialty) if you had the RN licensure.
