I'm an IV-cerified LVN.

What an LPN/LVN can do with IVs, PICCs, midlines, and central lines is entirely dependent upon the state in which he/she practices. Some states are restrictive regarding LPNs and IV therapy. I, however, happen to live in a state with a very wide open scope of practice with regard to LVNs and IVs.

I'm permitted to flush and heparinize lines, and administer meds via IVPB and IV push (as long as they are not sedating). I cannot give meds through a central line, but I am allowed to do the flushes before and after med administration through the central line.

Since I worked on a busy rehab unit with plenty of postsurgical patients, I was able to learn and utilize my IV therapy skills.

I'm and IV certified LVN in California. I am able to start peripheral IV lines, withdraw blood, hang maintenance fluids and certain things like IV iron and minerals/vitamins. I am also permitted to hang blood. However in my state I am not allowed to hang IV piggy backs or do IV pushes.

I am also IV certified, but didn't get a chance to use it. I can and have hung IVPBs during my brief 6 week stint on med-surg, but never started a line. I was a phlebotomist, so, that doesn't intimidate me, but I have forgotten how to secure the angiocath once it has been inserted. If I had more practice, I'd be perfect.

LPNs can access peripheral IVs and central lines, with some restrictions, in my state. I hang IVPB and do IVPs all the time. I can administer certain types of medications through central lines, but may not do any IVP through a central line.
