Long time looker first time poster

Hello. First time poster long time (3 or 4 months) lerker. First of all I think all nurses.com is a great asset to the nursing world. It's like the student doctor network (website) with a LOT less fear mongering and crazy people lol.

A bit about me. I'm a man (so I am told) from the faraway kingdom of Oklahoma. I am starting a RN program in Jan in my home town. I'm excited but I AM NERVOUS!!! I'm like wondering what the hell am I doing? Nursing is something smart people do!!! I never been a great student but not terrible but my self doubt on this thing is high. I have been boning up on the math (not my strongest subject)

I worked in a hospital as a CNA for 3 and a half years (loved it) on a acute surgery floor. (Hence the Ostomy name we had a LOT of those lol and I couldn't think of a name) but I took a break work wise and got a job at the county jail. (As a corrections officer) been doing that for 2 years. I like working in that environment but I missed hospital work so I applied to the school (had My pre reqs out of the way for a while) and got in.

Im rambling! Main point is what should I do to be ready (if possible) on day one. I have been working on the math (I bought a book on math for nurses) and I know from working as a CNA things like HIPPA, blood bourne pathogens, sensitivity with dying people/ family and not ******** where you eat.

Congratulations on your acceptance. You definitely are smart , just getting in! Now.. relax and learn as you go. You are WAY ahead of the game with you CNA experience.

The math required is just basic algebra.. you can do it!

Have confidence in yourself and your experience, you've got this. Now change your user name from an artificial opening.. to something cool ... like been there, done that.

Utilize the last year's class for basic expectations. Things will change every year but they should have helpful hints. There are a lot of free resources to help you study, and some that cost money. I avoided most of them because my school was very much of the opinion that if it didn't come from a required resource in the syllabus, it was wrong, even if it is EBP. With that said, to brush up on pathophysiology related to pharm, for example, you may find Khan academy and youtube helpful. I didn't personally use them or other sources for specific subjects, for reasons mentioned before. Last year's new folks can help you find resources and give tips for study. Every school is different. If I were doing it again, I'd definitely put up front effort into networking with last year's class. Since they're still students, they may be poor, which means you may be able to offer pizza for advice. If they're super impressed with the toppings, they may hook you up with some Quizlet. Also.. find out if there are standard values you should memorize. Some schools have standard values for example for serum potassium that do not change from class to class. Others you may have to learn again each course. Good luck.

Lol My GPA is better than that (the 0.5) I told someone that day it would be fun to put that as my gpa in a job apt and see where it goes. That would not be for jobs I'd actually want of course. Lol
