List of Drugs To Take!?

Nurses General Nursing

My friend is an RN who works in the oncology floor of her hospital. Very dedicated, organized and thorough nurse. She called me last night very disgusted. She lives in an apartment building and on her way into the complex, she runs into a woman who flags her down saying "Oh, just the person I was waiting for" and proceeds to tell her that she no longer has medical benefits and handed her a list of medications she needed for her child...Advair, Albuterol canister as well as some for the nebulizer and prednisone. No dosages, really expected for my friend to just go shopping at her place of work for Rx for this woman who barely says 'hello' to her under normal circumstances.

I mean, where do people get off with this?? It seems that people have no issues asking you to jepoardize your license, your integrity or your job to help them. I would have told this fool to kiss where the sun can't shine and they would have needed a biohazard truck to clean up after all of the language I would have used had she continued to be persistant.

Any wild stories of how people expected you to risk your position as a nurse?

It never ceases to amaze me how all of a sudden you become vital to people who never would look in your direction until they find out that you are potentially useful to them for something. It never seems to work in reverse. Uhhh, Ahhh, nooooo is always the answer you get when you ask for some help.

I Could not agree more!!!!Plus what a shame, people have some nerve for real asking for things like that!!!

Once, someone asked me to do a PPD for her son, because she was trying to get him into a drug program before sentencing to prison (he has been in and out of juvenile hall for years for crimes like aggreviated assault, armed robbery, etc... and she was trying to avoid the prison sentence). This woman is a manager for her own medical clinic in a different hospital. Said she didn't want the physicians she worked with to know she has a son like this. Promptly said 'no' and explained that with him residing in close quarters on many occasions, what happens if it comes up positive, and because I did it illegally, I am then committed to find a way for further evaluation?? I told her she should know better and maybe she should find another way.

We don't speak very often these days, but I still have my license.

"You need Viagra? Oh you poor dear, I wish I could help, it must be so hard...- ah no, I mean sorry, I mean keep up your hope, oh gosh, sorry again."

Losing access to meds can make people really panicky & nutty. This woman may be a nasty piece of work 24/7, I have no idea, but I think a lot of people will try whatever they can think up when they find themselves without access to the things they and/or their kids need to live. I doubt she understood how impossible what she was asking was. Many people wouldn't.

rxlist.org & needymeds.org are both clearinghouses for pharma company patient assistance programs. Needymeds.org has more info. on things like state and federal programs for accessing meds & other kinds of care.

Double posted, sorry!

Very true...thanks for being the voice of reason. I need to hear things like this in order to keep myself in check.

When I'm the voice of reason, things are very, very, bleak!

I think a lot of people have a vision that we have access to medications just like someone in a normal office environment has access to extra rolls of scotch tape. If you take just a few no one will know right.... uh wrong! The other misconception that I see floating is that as nurses we feel very comfortable with our medications to the point that we can administer them little to no thought (like riding a bike). I do feel comfortable with administering meds but only after I have gone to great lengths to make sure I have all my checks done and I am certain what I need to be giving is what I am actually giving. As nurses most of us take our medication administration very seriously and do not feel comfortable just handing you something over. To this day I still go though the patient who have little to no change in their medications and do the 5 checks. It may seem monotonous but you never know when pharmacy may accidentally slip up and send the right drug wrong dosage. I am sorry for this ladies situation but there is no way to legally assist her without pointing her in the direction of someone who can provide what she needs. I agree with the OP though, its amazing the things people will ask you to do as a nurse...

Walmart sells an albuterol inhaler with $9 under the ReliOn brand. I know the makers of Advair have a decent prescription assistance program. Prednisone should also be fairly cheap.

I bet she was just desperate and probably didnt know any better. When a child is in need and its unreachable, you would go to any length to get what your child needs, especially for the child to live. Some people really dont know what is/isnt allowed and just needs some direction/teaching as to resources and education. Cut her alittle slack. People who are not in the medical field may not understand what the job description truely is. Helping/educating/guiding to resources are all in our job description and we must not forget that.
