Leaving new job for a better offer

I accepted a job that I am interested in because I didn't think anything else was going to come up. However, a MUCH better offer is potentially coming my way. I haven't started my first job but if I get the offer for the better job, how would you go about leaving without making waves?

Just what you said...

Just put yourself first here. Keep the job you have. If you get a better one resign. I would ask the current job if they want two weeks notice, but if they are training you they are probably happy to let you go right away. DON'T tell the first job you may have another offer. Wait until the second job makes an actual offer. Good luck!

Thank is what I am thining nurse2033. The first job is at a big hospital system and I'm afraid I'll blacklist myself though. Right now I am keeping on the down-low until I get an offer but when I went to the second job it went great.

If you accept the other offer, just be truthful. Tell them the other position works better for you at this time. Express gratitude for the opportunity and leave the door open if necessary to return at a later date. Believe me, they appreciate honesty more than people realize.

a two weeks notice and a letter or resignation should be fine, just be as professional and courteous as you can. but don't do anything until you know you've got the job.

I'm in the same position...except I'm leaving after one month. I plan on doing what everyone here is saying.

Good luck to you!

Doesn't it feel good to have options! Don't screw it up. Be very very grateful for the op offered in the first job. Be sure you leave with loose ends tied up best you can. Remember, you don't want a do not rehire on your record if you can at all prevent it!

Keep in mind everyone...job hopping is not good. It doesn't look good on resumes. And the grass isn't always greener.....just my :twocents:

Yes - it's something I've definitely thought about and - of course - I've totally rationalized my decisions

For me, the issues are: safety, sanity and opportunity. Regarding safety, I currently work in a state psych hospital that is understaffed and has had a rash of staff injuries. I know it's 'par for the course' with psych, but I don't like the policies in place that put both patients and staff at risk. More importantly, I've decided psych is definitely not for me and this is not a specialty you can just sort of glide through...and this new opportunity is something I simply can't pass up as a new grad. I don't want to be too specific on here (so I don't incriminate myself) but it's somewhere I'll gain lots of skills and experience.

I'm not comfortable job hopping....and I'm agonizing over how I'm going to break the news, but life is too short to be miserable, frightened and unsafe at your job. I'm truly grateful for the luck and opportunity of even finding ONE job in this economy as a new grad and doubly thankful for finding a second.

Cogath - have you given your current job notice yet?

It sounds like you have sound reasons...you've got a good head on your shoulders. Good luck!:nurse:

No, I have not given notice until I hear from job number two that I am definitely hired. The difference between these two jobs is stark, and I have my reasons -- one is part time, low wage, other is full time and very well-paid and I felt a lot more comfortable and really loved the culture of the workplace. Won't go into much more detail here but this is for the best for me. This is the first time I have been in this position of getting to choose the best deal, my only other two jobs I've had I've been at one for 5+ years and was at the other for 3+ years.
