Job to have more family time

Nurses General Nursing

I currently work 7 12s (full time) every 14 days. Although I love my job and would be sad to leave, I am wanting to find a RN job that would be more family friendly. I've been told to look into GI/endo, PACU, or clinic nursing. I work ER now and am worried about changing but I sometimes wouldn't mind a less stressful environment. Any nurses from these areas or other areas have advice? Is it more family friendly? I'm so tired of getting home at 8pm and now seeing my family. Then after 4 or 5 12s in a row my fuss off feel like all I do is catch up! Thanks in advance!

It wasn't until I left hospital work, period, that I felt like I had separate family time and work time. I mean, REALLY separate, as in no one calling me on my day/night off to cover a shift for someone who called out.

When I went to clinic work, ambulatory, essentially anything that's OFFICE hours, that's when you can breathe about sacrosanct family time. After all, if it's not OPEN, they can't call you in ;)

I've only worked in offices so that I can have the evenings, weekends, and holidays home with my family. Check with specialist offices versus PCP because they're more likely to use nurses vs. MAs. Cardio might use RNs more than LPNs because of coumadin dose adjustments and administering cardiac meds.

Thank you for the info!

That's funny. I left the office to have more time with my family. I was doing 5 eight hour shifts, now I do 3 twelve hour shifts. For me that meant going from working 20 days a month to 13 days a month. Plus I usually have stretches where I'm off for 4 or 5 days in a row depending on how I arrange my schedule. That's way better than only having weekends and holidays off.
