I've lost my mojo.....

I'm doing an external post graduate diploma nursing (mental health) and I just can't get into my study. My work has been up and down of late (less work, less money), and my sleeping schedule has been really thrown out of whack. I went on Lexapro (Escitalopram) to help with SAD (seasonal affective disorder), cos the winter was getting me down. I think it has made me really tired and sluggish, even though I split my dose to a 5mg tablet mane, and 5mg nocte. I struggle to get out of bed in the morning for work or even when I'm off.

I can't afford the book for study either - tried to get help to buy it (no luck), and they don't have it secondhand.

I used to enjoy study but now I find it a struggle. I've asked for an extension which I don't see any problem with getting.

How can I get my interest back in study? I don't want to have to drop out of this subject because of work/personal problems, cos I'll have to pay for it anyway. Also I failed one subject and don't want to fail another one. I really want to get my post grad dip.

Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

Thanx!

hi Carol...I've seen your posts on the Australian nurses board I think?

I have a couple of psych nursing textbooks I would be willing to loan to you if you like (if you are in Perth that is)

I am a mental health nurse working in the public system ...I had to do a re-registration course a couple of years ago which is why I have the textbooks...let me know if you'd like to borrow them

hmmm-Your heading sounded like one of those "sexual dysfunction" kind of ads.... Thought I'd be reading something completely different....:lol2:

Hi, very kind of you to offer Diane.

Yes I am living in Perth. That would be great if you have the book I require. It is:

STUART (2009) Principles and Practice of Psychiatric Nursing (7TH ed.). The 7th edition is now out of print and the 9th edition is the one they are using now. Do you have that one at all?

Talk to your healthcare provider and let them know what you're feeling. This funk may have its origin in the physical realm.

Try to get some exercise. It can bring about a release of endorphins that could boost your motivation.

See how different the two editions of the textbook are. Sometimes the changes are sweeping, but many times they are something that could be worked around.

Find something that will make you laugh. Again, the endorphins can help.

But--and I can't stress this enough--get in touch with your care provider, and check into whether this is physical (SAD-related or other) or not and what can be done to help.

Best wishes.

Hi Diane

I am south of the river - will email you privately with details. Are you willing to sell the book or loan it out, as I don't get paid till next Wed/Thurs so don't have money to buy it b4 then.

Let me know.

I am happy to loan you the books, I don't want to sell them as they come in handy from time to time.

Which uni are you studying through? Do you have to do prac for your course & where will you do it?

I am at ECU, currently upgrading my hospital based qualification to a BSc (nursing)...this is my last semester, 2 units to go & I will be very happy to be finished!

Look forward to your email.

Hi Diane

Yes I am also studying externally through ECU.

I am on my first unit, but can't get hold of this book! I have had such a frustrating day ringing uni bookshops, and they aren't stocking it (even at ECU) because the lecturer has told us to get the book for the unit, but it is not recommended, so the bookshop/s don't have it in stock. It will take 7-12 working days to get & I can't wait that long.

It has been such a frustrating day!! The woman at the bookshop was rattling on about me being able to order it from the UK! I said how ridiculous - they must have it here in Aust. Well turns out I can get it through ECU bookshop (that lady gave me wrong info), but they demand payment even before ordering it even though it gets used for their courses. It's a strange system here in WA compared to Unibooks over east, I must say.

I've only done some notes and reading for my assignment which is due tomorrow. I asked for an extension, saying it has been hard getting the book, but the lecturer hasn't got back to me.

And I'm back at work tomorrow so that is another day gone for study.

I will email you my details when I calm down - I think I will go get a glass of wine (or maybe a bottle will be better ha ha!)

Let me know what kind of wine you like-I live in the Cape Winelands, estates everywhere I turn...:D

Seriously though, you need to be careful not to overdo study anyway-remember concentration spans only stretch so far; after that you need to get up and get away from your books for a while, preferably something outdoors. Don't go burning yourself out! it's horrible when you're trying to study but nothing seems to stick, like you're into system overload. If you've reached that stage, you definitely need a break...

And think of all that sexual dysfunction...

Has anyone got the book I mentioned above (in Perth WA) for SALE? I will be needing it more than anyone can borrow it to me (for all of the course over a year) my lectuer told me. If you have 7th or 9th edition FOR SALE ONLY, please contact me here (lecturer didn't recommend using other editions).

Thanks. Carol
