Is this overtime at your facility?

Ok maybe a dumb question, but sometimes I'm asked to work Day shift (7-3) and then come back 8 hours later and work Noc shift (11-7a). My facility doesn't consider this overtime because I have 8 hours off in between shifts. But with the driving back and forth, not to mention trying to get some sleep at odd hours it really isn't much of a break. Do all facilities do this or is mine "special"?

Any info would be great. Thanks!

At my facility overtime is automatically achieved when you work more than 40 hours a week. Not for working more than 8 hours per day.

Our facility has made it unacceptable to work 16 hour shifts since it is considered unsafe for both RN/LPN/CNA and patient.

i think this would be state by state....in the state i am familiar with , they can not demand you come in without at least 8 full hours between, and overtime is ove 40 hours in a week..unless otherwise agreed to by contract.

Not OT in my facility,just as working eve's and double backing to a day shift the next am isn't OT, actually very little qualifies as OT these days,even if you're scheduled for an 8 hr shift and stay for 12-- it's straight time :stone

Where I work you have to go over 40 hours in the week to get OT. Doesn't matter if you work doubles, day shift and then nights. You have to pass the 40 hour mark

I've been scheduled to work with less than 8 hrs between shifts. Usually working from 11 pm to 7:30 AM then being expected to be back at 3 pm. I'ts not overtime in my facility unless you work 40+ hrs. I think its unsafe and have protested many times.

Well thanks everybody for your replies. I guess it's not unusual for a facility to do this. I guess I thought that in California anything over 40 hours a week or over 8 hours a day was overtime? Must not be the case...

So its required by you or they are requesting you do this. WHen I have been asked to work extra I get them to agree to time and a half

For me to get OT, I have to work more than 80 hours in a 2-week pay period. It does not matter what hours achieves that in the meantime, if I want OT, it has to be more than 80 over 2 weeks.

ETA : I recall getting screwed on this once, as they scheduled me for a 60 hour week, and then a PT week "to make-up for it", and I didn't get any OT for working (over) 60 hours that week.

Anything over 40 hours in a work week is considered overtime at my facility. SO, you could work 8 one day and 16 the next. It doesn't go day by day. Mainly it's a weekly thing.

we have to have 80 hours in a two week period for overtime. I've worked over 16 hours to stay due to poor staffing, They have called me off later in the week so they would not have to pay me for the ot which is why I don't try to help out as much anymore. We also don't get ot for holidays which really stink.

I'm not sure what the policy is where I work because I don't pull OT and we have not had to be mandated yet..One of my co-workers worked a double on Friday then again Saturday and then the supervisor asked her if she would do it again on Sunday...No way would that be safe for the residents or for her....I'm glad she did not let them browbeat her into it....
