I'm torn: Nursing vs Rad Tech

Nurses General Nursing

Right now I am in my first semester of the Rad Tech program, and I am enjoying it so far. However, I always wanted to be an RN. I recently got accepted in the nursing program for Jan 2013. I was thinking about finishing up the Rad Tech semester and then dropping out to pursue the nursing program next year. But I am not sure. What if I don't like nursing and would have been better off a Rad Tech? Can someone tell me the pros and cons of being a nurse?

LOL - laying out all the pros and cons would be like trying to explain the color blue. Everyone is unique - what is a 'pro' for me may be a 'con' for you. You may need to be more specific about the parameters you're interested in. One major consideration is that ADN grads are having a very tough time getting jobs in many areas - employers want BSNs. If this is true in your area, then you may need to factor in the issue of investing more time in your basic education. Would this be do-able for you?

Rad techs have a more limited scope of practice. This allows you to draw specific boundaries and be able to say "that is not my job". There are threads on this forum that show how undefined is the nurses' job description (TV repair, anyone)?

Rad tech does not have quite the emotional or physical wear and tear either; you can better survive long term.

Think carefully about dropping out! Rad tech spots in programs are really hard to get into, especially these days.
