I'm a nursing student and can't get a hospital job!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I just lost my temp office job, and I'm looking into getting a job in a Houston hospital as a student nurse, nursing assistant, patient care assistant, etc. However, I've been trying for years. My instructors tell me that I'm brilliant and that hospitals are rooting for new grads, but I haven't even been asked for an interview for two years. I have been a nurse aide in a nursing home, I have done some home health, I'm graduating from an ADN program in May, I actually worked in a school that trains nurse assistants, and

I'll call in to the nurse recruiting office, and they will immediately tell me to apply online. I do so, and submit my resume (which I have been told by my instructors to be excellent) which I tailor for each workplace. I'll call in a couple days later, inquiring if positions are still open and informing them that I am interested and submitted an application. However, I never hear back even if I call in every few days.

Any advice?

Thanks so much for your advice! On Tuesday, I have a job interview for a student nurse at LBJ. Although I'm kind of wary about working for HCHD, I'm sure that I'll get a lot of good experience. I've also tried MD Anderson and Memorial Hermann, but I had a hard time actually finding the right person to talk to.

Wish me luck on this interview!

How Do I Contact The Nurse Manager

Call and ask for them?

Also, I had some crappy luck getting a job at a hospital when I was a nursing student. I was a CNA with 2 years of experience at a nursing home.

I managed to get an interview with a nursing manager who more or less hired me (on condition that my background check came back okay). Afterwards, I went to HR to fill out an application, give references, etc. I got absolutely no response.

So after 2 weeks I contacted the manager I had interviewed with and she told me they were still waiting for my references. I drove to the hospital, went to the HR department and they told me they had mailed the references out over 2 weeks ago. However, they had not received my references back, and would send them out one more time. I asked to verify the addresses on my references and they were all correct.

About a week later I had never heard back. So I actually called my references and asked them, "Did you receive anything in the mail about me from hospital x?" They all said no. I contacted the HR department again and they insisted they had mailed out the references both times. Which is odd considering none of my references said they had ever received anything at all from this hospital.

Now I'm an RN, and I never even bothered to apply at that hospital (even though it is closer than where I work now). Screw that place.

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM I AM GETTING FRUSTRATED I AM A NEW RN GRADUATE AND I SEND OUT TONS OF RESUME AND NO RESPONSE.

The,albeit, sneaky way to find out who the nurse managers are is to call the floor you want to apply for, med-surg, cardiac, whatever...tell them something to the affect of you or your family was patient and you have some issues to discuss and you would like the name of the nurse manager who would take care of that...person on other end gives you name, you hang up!.... You call back or go in person the next day or so and voila!...My nursing friend told me of this way to get information....sneaky little nurses.LOL
