Tell them that you really enjoyed working at your PT job but you have a chance to pick up extra time/experience/etc. at your curent job that you feel can really advance your career. Then give them the required amount of notice (2 weeks, 1 month, whatever) before your last day. You'll do more damage leaving w/o giving notice than by anything you could tell them.

If you want, you can also add that you'd recommend working there to other people and put the word out to friends/coworkers who might be interested...but don't get trapped into promising to find them a replacement. Just say that you'll spread the word about them :)

Agreed. Give proper notice, and let them know your primary job is expanding. Let your manager and co-workers know you have enjoyed working there and will miss them. Work out your notice. Be gracious when leaving. Healthcare facilities are used to people coming and going. If you leave in good standing, you wont burn bridges.

I agree, there are so many people coming and going that they should not be offended as long as you give them the required amount of time before you quit. And, you never know, you might still wish to pick up shifts there another time in the future, so, it is good that you are considering not just leaving, but HOW you leave. Best wishes in the ER!
