I feel SO Bad :(

Ok so has anyone else had this problem or has experienced what I am experiencing. So I have the guy from The college network come to my house today to tell me about Indiana State University, and how I had to pay 13,000 for his books for my prereqs and anoth 13,000 for the ISU lvn-rn bsn program. Yea well Sorry I don't have 300 dollars a month for the next 5 years to pay for the first 13,000. And I sure don't for the second. I am not paying 600 bucks a month for a student loan! Thats ridiculous! I already spent 10,000 on my LVN, through a private school and have to pay off that loan. Why does it have to cost so much in this world to get ahead- or be so hard it seems. These wait list at the local colleges are ridiculous! So then I decided I probably should just go to the jr college by my house to do my prereqs, but the guy at TCN made it sound so nice to complete these prereqs- 1 class in a month. does anyone know if state and jr colleges except CLEP, DANTES, or EXCELSIOR... so I can do them at home online and apply to several colleges? Its hard going to school with a baby and a husband that works full time, and a full time worker yourself. I give props to all the nurses that have done this!!! thanx for letting me vent :(

A lot of hospitals will pay your way through school if C or above grades usually. You might want to check where you work.

I honestly know nothing about The College Network; but from what I hear you may want to do a search on this site. Apparently it's not as good as it might sound? Maybe someone else who knows more will chime in.

As far as "junior college" goes, do you mean community college? They are just as good as other schools, and as tough as it must be with a baby and being married and wanting to go to school; I encourage you to go for it! :)

good luck!

I was looking into a private University before I moved to a different state, and they took DANTES. I think it varies depending on which school you would like to go to.

From what I've heard about TCN, both good and bad, I wouldn't go through them for my education.

Check out the "Distance Learning" forum, there are some threads on there that talk about online education. I am trying to decide where to go myself, since the local state university where I am currently residing doesn't think my ASN degree is valid since it's from a "technical college".

Just my humble two cents....Please avoid as much debt as possible given your present circumstances. You'll always be drowning in debt if you acquire more loans at this point. Try the community college route. It's so much more affordable, and most employers will provide some type of tuition reimbursement to help with your transition to RN. Some debt is necessary to survive in today's world, but too much unnecessary debt can cause a lot of problems and I know personally of families that have come to financial ruin because of it. Please be careful whatever you decide. It sounds like you are weighing your options very seriously, so I am sure that you will not make a hasty decision. I have worked with nurses during school who had over $100,000 in school loans and after paying their monthly expenses only had a hundred bucks left over to buy food for the month. Please do not feel pressured by anyone to sign up for something that you're having doubts about, especially if you suspect that they are only pressuring you to get themselves a hefty commission.

You might look at what the local hospitals are offering. I'm working on my BSN, and one of the hospitals in town is paying all my tuition, entirely, in exchange for working for them for 4 years when I graduate. They offer the same program for some LPN to RN and RN to BSN programs, I believe. It'd be worth it to see if your hospitals offer similar programs :) Best of luck to you!

Can you not do online classes through your local community college? At least for the pre-reqs anyway?

From what I've heard about the college network, they are a book company, and you can contact ISU directly to sign up for classes and get your books elsewhere, and save BOATLOad of $$. Definately search the college network on these forums. There are lots of discussions.

you do NOT have to go through The college Network to do excelsior

If you are looking to go through Excelsior you do not have to go through The College Network or any other publishing company. Save your hard earned money. Go directly through EC and only use their materials. Still costs money but sure saves some over going through third party. Also, look into if your employer will pay some or all of your tuition and their criteria for payment. You can also go directly through Indian State University, just log in to their web site. Both colleges accept CLEP and some Dantes.
