I Bombed My Physiology Exam

Hello Nursing Community,

I bombed my physiology exam. My kids were looking forward for me to go to Nursing School. I am so bumed out. I was also wonder to myself if this is the correct career step I should take? Maybe I am not good in the science class. I had a really hard time in this class. I did well in the lab, but the lecture I screwed up. I am so disappointed right now I can't sleep. This class was my last class before my program. I have so much going on in my life right now. Within this next year, my house that I am living in will be demolished, no financial aid for next year, my job is on the line and I have to find a another place to relocate to. I am so upset. Well, anyways I can't go back and redo all of this. I have to keep plugging away with my life. I just think about my children. How do you know if Nursing is something that is just not a good career choice. I have been trying to become a Nurse for many years and these important classes I just can't pass with a high enough grade. Can someone answer that for me. I also have been looking for another job. I would rather work from home, does anyone have any ideas or jobs I can do from home to make extra cash. I am a older person and have been trying to pursue nursing for most of my life, but it has just not happen for me. I don't know what to do. I am getting old. My kids need a better life. What am I doing wrong. I feel so helpless sometimes. Should I take a career assessment. I currently work as a tech in a major hospital in my area. I sacrificed so much to finish this class with a decent grade. I bombed:banghead:! Help anyone.

Definitely talk to your college's career center and get an assessment. If you consistently struggle with the science classes, nursing school will be difficult. OTOH, if this was an isolated "bombing", then you may just need to retake the course. A few of those aptitude tests should show you where your strengths lie. Then you can craft a career plan that plays to your strengths.

If you don't think nursing is right for you, look into an allied health profession like Medical Insurance Specialist which is medical coding and billing, Occupational Therapy Assistant, there are many programs, do a search on Google and see what you can find that would interest you, some you can take home once you get some experience like the billing and coding work. Keep your head up, when one door closes another will open, and you will find yourself a survivor, and a stronger person! I was where you are once not too long ago, and with the help of God, friends and family, I moved 350 miles away for a new job, with a borrowed car, 800 bucks and my then 14 year old son with me! I now have a great job that I truly like, I make enough to buy a house, and pay the bills and even take a short vacation now and then.... so all you have to do is keep plugging away and never give up on your dream to make a better life for you and your kids.... Sometimes we have to adjust our aim!

don't you let one failure, that is if it's your only one, get in the way of you becoming a nurse. that is, if nursing is something you've always wanted then by all means seek some tutoring help, or you may want to re-think to study habits when it comes to sciences. good luck.

Yeah, I guess I shouldn't be so hard on myself. I really love the Nursing profession. I think maybe I just need to take the class alone. This class was taken in the summer. I guess, like you said maybe it is my study habits. I need to find out what type of study habits I have. I am also a Department of Rehab student, when they find out my grades they are not going to pay for my schooling. I don't know. I feel like I let them down and also my kids. I trying to let it go and to find positive ways to pick myself up and try again. Thank you for the encouraging words I really appreciate people like you. God Bless!

i want to add that nursing is not for everyone, but there are so many other health care occupations out there to choose from!

if for some reason you just cannot do the science, and nursing is a lot of science, including the entrance exam, you certainly have many options.

I know this is a isolated bombing. I was so close to my goal. Well General I guess I have to start over again! I do okay in Anatomy section, but physiology really kicked my $%%$. 20 years ago as a college freshman majoring in pre-med I got a D in Biology and a D- in chemistry and completely changed my career direction which in hindsight was too hasty a decision. After switching gears towards another industry which was nice but devoid of any passion, I find myself returning to health care 20 years later, specifically nursing, because I realized my poor performance back then was circumstantial rather than internal. I am not unintelligent by any means, I just was not focused back then and I really did not realize the value of an education as I do now. Your story sounds a lot like mine in a different flavor ...

I have since retaken biology and chemistry and received A's ... if you're heart is into pursuing nursing, never give up. It will never be too late!

Hi FairCari,

I have already look into other options, but most of them require A & P. I am almost finished with all my requirement for any BSN program. I want to get a Bachelors. I am getting older and know that I need a degree to make a better living. If you have any advice for me let me know. I work for a Major hospital as a CNA. I know to make decent money you have to have that degree. Can you give me any suggestions on online programs or other opitions. Thanks FairyCari, love that name. God Bless Carla

WoW, I don't know why when I read your posting I got chills. I know now that I can do this even if I have to retake this class. I know the material, but when come to the exams I froze. I have to find ways to become a better student. Paco386 I am older then you, but I think i will also become a better Nurse because of it. Not saying that younger Nurses are not good, but it has just taken me a lot longer to pursue my goals. I do work in a hospital and I try to give good quality care to the patient. There are 3 or 4 people in my physiology class this semester who failed it over the summer. That's a tough class to take in a short semester. Take it alone and see if your school has any tutoring help. You can do it!
