Yes, the results of the litigation required that some of the money from the settlement (about 15% in most states) go to the tobacco farmers that harvest the tobacco, and take the risks that come with planting something in the earth. They are the ones that may be forced out of business by the litigation in the first place.

Are you surprised? Money flows toward political power in this country, as it does in most. When nurses gain some political organization (by sticking together and taking some risks), perhaps some power and money will flow our way. Until then....
I didn't get to read the article b/c I couldn't get the link to work. I'll try again.
Just wanted to say that my entire RN salary is paid from tobacco settlement money. Thought some of you might like to know that atleast some of the money is going where it's supposed to go. I do wonder what will happen though when the money runs out. It's a shame to think there are states that are not using it as it was intended.....and in the future I may have to close the clinic due to lack of funds.
I guess I am lucky...in my state they are using the tobacco settlement money to pay for nursing students financial aid. If you promise to work full time for 2 years in the state they will contribute 50% to student loans after graduation.

Unless things have changed, Massachusetts is the ONLY state to use 100% of the settlement money for anti-tobacco campaigns.
