In a hospital. Landed prior to graduating and taking NCLEX.

b) how long did you stay at the first job?

1 yr.

c) why did you leave and what did you do before going to the next?

I found a job a bit closer to home. I had a the second job before I left my first.

Specializes in Geriatrics, Home Health.

A- I graduated in May 2008, and passed the NCLEX in July. Technically, I found my first job 8 months later, at a nursing home, but the job was cancelled after 45 minutes. I found the next job 2 months later, in assisted living.

B- I stayed for 13 months.

C- I left because I wanted to develop more skills. All I did in assisted living was pass meds and supervise the aides.

Specializes in FNP, ONP.

a) what was your first job and how long after graduating did you land it?

Med-surg floor, 3 7a-3p days, rotating 7a-p w/e, 1990. Had a half dozen offers before graduation, and took the hardest job with the staff that seemed like the most fun. It was a good choice.

b) how long did you stay at the first job?

2.5 years. Loved it.

c) why did you leave and what did you do before going to the next?

moved across the state for spouse's career. Took next job in ICU, rotating 12h shifts days to nights. It was just OK. Stayed there 2 years until I was promoted to manager of a different unit.

Specializes in Nursing Professional Development.

Graduated in late 1970's. Started 1st job about a month after graduation

1st job = Staff nurse, NICU. Straight nights for a year, the day/night rotation

Stayed for 2 years

Then moved to another state to attend graduate school

A. Medical/Tele Floor Nurse - 1 month before graduation

B. Still there for now....

C. Transferring to ICU in March but in the same facility to help get my career on track

Specializes in Pedi.

a) what was your first job and how long after graduating did you land it?

Inpatient pedi/neuroscience. I had my job offer 2 months before graduating and began working 3 months after.

b) how long did you stay at the first job?

I have been there for nearly 4 1/2 years and am still there. Am hoping new opportunities come up soon.

c) why did you leave and what did you do before going to the next

I like the person who said "the job was hell under fluorescent lighting"... pretty much how it feels. The hospital thinks it's always right, no one's opinions are taken seriously, high stress/tense environment, everyone is miserable and if I don't leave soon, I'm going to burn out of nursing and end up working at a grocery store.

Graduated Aug 2010 but didn't take the NCLEX until Feb 2011.

First job the LTC hall of an LTAC/SNF.

Stayed 2 months.

"Hell under fluorescent lighting" pretty much sums it up!

Got a job on a Med/Surg floor in a hospital where my hubby is stationed. Our patients are mostly back surgery. I love the nurses I work with!!!! I have been there 3 months now.

I will leave in just about 2.5 yrs. That is when my hubby retires from the Army and we can move back to our house in Florida. :D

tele unit

been there almost 24 years

still there........

a) what was your first job and how long after graduating did you land it?

An LTACH where I worked as an STNA while finishing up nursing school. I graduated in May 2010, passed NCLEX in August and then started a few weeks later as an RN.

b) how long did you stay at the first job?

I only stayed FT for about five months. When I got a different job (Peds) I stayed PRN. Total time there as an RN was about ten months.

c) why did you leave and what did you do before going to the next?

I knew I was going to hate it. I don't want to work with adults and the setting just wasn't for me, but none of my other applications were getting looked at. The patient load was horrible (often ten), especially for a new grad. I felt like I was just a task monkey and didn't actually get to care for my patients and understand what the heck was going on with them. Majority of the people I worked with were wonderful so I tried to grin and bear it thinking it was just new grad stress but even after I went PRN I eventually decided it wasn't worth it. I have plenty of opportunity to pick up OT at my FT job and I don't have anxiety just thinking of going to work!

Specializes in Leadership, Psych, HomeCare, Amb. Care.

In the early 80's. The job market was tight then & our hospital offered jobs to about 1/2 that applied.

Med-surg overflow unit, PM shift. Started a week or 2 after boards. That was July, received results in September.

Not my first choice, I was on that unit for a year. Then they closed the unit, and I was offered a position in Psych, my preferred area.

Stayed there 7 years till I completed my BSN & sought out new challenges. Psychiatric Home care
