HELP...MA or RN

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hey everyone i have a dilemma.. I have my RN license and I got offered a Medical Assistant position at a clinic and they might potentially hire Registered nurses in the future but don't know when that is. I also got offered a Registered Nurse position but its only a 2 months temporary assignment where i review medical records for the HEDIS evaluation project.. Which one should i take..help:rolleyes:

Specializes in Med/Surg, Ortho, ASC.

If you are indeed an RN, I would without a doubt take the RN position. Temporary may lead to permanent.

I don't think it could lead to a permanent position. The position is a medical record review nurse where they only need you for 2 months its the HEDIS evaluation thing..

Take the RN position. Even if it's only temporary, you're better off building RN experience than MA experience for future positions.

What would you rather have on your resume? RN experience or MA experience?

Specializes in Oncology; medical specialty website.

They'll hire you as an "MA" but expect you to work like an RN. You'll still be held to the same standards as an RN, even if you work as an MA. I think it would look really odd on a resume to say you took a position as an MA. Take the temporary position that will give you experience as an RN.

Yes, this.

If you are licensed as an RN, you will be held to those standards despite your job title.

Get the RN experience and NETWORK.

Much luck to you.

thanks everyone for the insight...

Without question RN. You went to school for years to attain that title so don't sell yourself short. In my opinion to hire you as an MA is wrong. You will always be an RN and would receive MA compensation and will not earn respect of those you work for and it could actually hinder future job endeavors.just my two humble cents worth.

As others have stated, you will be held accountable to your license. I wonder why they would even make an offer to you, with your licensure, as MA's work under the doc's license. Maybe they think you are desperate? I'd be suspicious of being taken advantage of there. Go for the position where you are hired for the title you have worked so hard to earn.

Thanks HCC2010 for asking this question. I logged on and was about the ask the same question, except I haven't been offered a job! I too am a licensed RN and a registered MA. I was considering applying for MA positions while maybe going back to school for my BSN. I haven't been able to land my first nursing job though. The advice makes sense, but I'm becoming desperate. If anyone offers ME a position as a MA, I'm taking it!!

If they are saying they might potentially hire you on as an RN in the future I would say the chances of that ever happening are non-existant. Why would they pay you more to do a job that they've already got you doing with a lower salary?

You would be running the risk of taking a job as an MA that will never offer you the RN experience or title you can put on your resume. And then getting stuck there because for all intents and purposes you will still, a year down the road, be an "inexperienced RN" and have no other choice but to continue working in the role of MA.

My suggestion would be to get that "experienced RN" section on your resume as fast as possible, this will be a jumping off point. You can start working on making some contacts and connections while you are on the job.
