We recently learned that one of our very dear and special patients died last weekend. I try to not grow too attached to them, but no one could resist this little one. Despite all of the hardships he delt with on a daily basis, he was the happiest and friendliest kid you could ever hope to meet. His end was very tragic and unfair. I can't believe I am never going to see him again. His smile could light up a room.. I am just greatful that I was a part of his life, and I hope he is in a much better place.

i smiled at your post.

not a 'happy' smile...it was bittersweet...

acknowledging your loss of a pt who touched you, both professionally and personally.

sometime soon, you will find comfort in having such a special person in your life, however brief.

perhaps if you take his "happiest and friendliest" qualities, and pay them forward...

you will feel him smile.

your pt is no longer among us.

he is now surrounded by love and light.

try and take comfort in 'knowing' that any suffering and tragedy, are only fragments from an imperfect environment...

to which he no longer belongs.

i believe that, with all my heart.

keep him close, and share him by touching others, as he did with you.

remember his strength when you feel down. i have met some amazing patients of all ages who have taught me to be a better person. i have lost patients young & old and cried, i've been to wakes and funerals. it's tough and you will get through it. smile because he made a difference in your life.

Awe...huggs. Gotta be hard with the kids. I have that hard time with my LTC residents. You get to know them and the families.....huggs again.

Unquestionably, this is the part of nursing that no one looks forward to, especially when little ones are involved. Moreover, it doesn't matter what other nurses might say, for example: "It gets easier with time" truthfully it doesn't when you are passionate about nursing. However, it shows that we are humans although some people might think we are made out of rock. Many a times during my nursing career I have heard people say "nurses must learn how to hide their feelings in order to do their jobs". xoemmylouox the most amazing thing was that this patient awaken the human side of you and that's a gift, that you should share with future patients...wishing you all the very best as I send you hugs from across the miles... Ciao~
