Good nursing Supervisors

We have all seen the threads about BAD supervisors:down: and we all have horror stories:argue:. I have been a House Supervisor for about 6 months and have been doing the best I can. The R.N.'s and C.N.A.'s I work with are top-notch and I love working with them:bow:.

My question is... Have you ever worked for/with a GOOD supervisor:up:? How about a few examples so I can learn?

I've worked with both.

A bad supervisor, is "always" too busy to do anything you ask of them. When they are sitting in their office watching T.V.

They are nasty on the phone when you speak with them. Generally give off the feeling like "Why are you bothering me!"

A good supervisor, promptly answers your pages/calls. Gets all the information before giving advise, is never too busy to lend a hand in an emergency situation. Is pro-active in getting patients moved from one place to another ASAP. Does't take the "The room has to be cleaned" excuse when their are other empty beds.

Thats the difference for me between a good and bad nursing supervisor.

I've been supervisor of a very busy ER for just over a year and a half. I think that the absolute best thing that I do for my staff is get out there on the floor when we're slammed...I start lines, do EKGs, clean up poo, be that second set of hands with our truly sick patients, whatever...; I can't tell you how many times I get thanked for doing these things...staff always comment that "none of the other supervisors" would do this. I'm not tooting my own horn, but I think the best way to get respect is to show how you are there for your staff and not above getting dirty. If I didn't do any direct patient care, I don't think I'd even feel like I was a nurse anymore! That, and treat everyone equally...a lot of my best friends are my staff members, but they are never given special treatment.

yes, i have worked for a supervisor that was exceptional......and now's she's my boss and i couldn't be more pleased! as a supervisor, she was friendly, approachable, had a sense of humor, did NOT forget she's an RN first and management second. staffing will always fall ultimately on your shoulders....good or bad....being willing to pitch in and help get over a crisis will always put you in good standing with the people you supervise. remember......you are an RN FIRST and good patient care is everyone's ultimate goal!.....whatever it takes. :redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe

I worked with a fantastic Night supervisor called Chris and she was the best. You always felt safe at night if it was her night to work-and when you were stretched she thought nothing of pushing up her sleves and helping out on the floor.

she died many years late of the dreaded breast CA-but to us night nurses in the UK she was the origional Florence Nightingale

Specializes in ICU/CCU/CVICU/ED/HS.

Thanx for the good advice... It has been taken to heart... And will be used, keep it coming...
