good markets for new grads

Hi everybody. We've all heard about the current market for nurses. Some say it really sucks because there are no jobs, others say there are jobs but only in certain areas.

Let's start a list of places where jobs still seem to be available, especially for new grads. I currently work as a tech and am working on my BSN (already have 2 previous bachelors degrees), so hopefully all of this will gain me some sort of favor with hiring managers. In any case, what are some of the markets here in the U.S. that are still new-grad friendly?

By market am guessing you mean hospitals?

Lourdes Hospital Binghamton NY. Magnet hospital.

Athens, GA: St. Mary's and Athens Regional

Winder, GA: Barrow Regional Hospital

Commerce, GA: BJC Medical Center

Gainesville, GA: Northeast GA Medical Center

They have jobs listed and several of these hospitals also hire LPN's for thier SNF, Hospice and Clinics.

These are smaller towns, but all are within 1- 1 1/2 hours from Atlanta.

Just about the whole state of North Dakota. I wouldn't count on your previous bachelors degrees to count for anything in nursing.

In Texas there are nearly 600 hospitals. They range in size from small town facilities with maybe 25 beds to places like Baylor in Dallas or MD Anderson in Houston that are actually small cities by themselves. As far as specific places go, I've noticed that the mid-size cities (pop. > 50k) are good places to start looking.

just be careful, because many places are advertising/listing new grads spots, but they aren't actually hiring any, ha. the hospital i work at is like that, they've never changed their new grad listings, but haven't hired one in over a year, ouch.

Very true!! I met a nurse manager at a large hospital in Phoenix that had listed positions and she said that they get tons of online applicants and resumes, but they have no intention of hiring anybody. I don't know why places advertise ghost positions. I didn't ask further questions because I had a job and wasn't looking:)

why is it that hospitals show tons of vacant positions on their websites but don't fill them, even with seasoned nurses? it makes no sense. does someone on here understand this logic?

the hospital hr people have to justify their jobs, processing X amount of apps whether they're going to hire or not meets the quota. also, this economy has had an affect on nursing that hasn't been experienced by any that work in hr before (the length of this recession is unprecedented and it's still going "strong"), add to that the cuts in some fed/state health care programs and possible obama care, so they're kinda baffled, but staying prepared (still listing jobs and taking apps) for a recovery.

new grads not long ago had their choice of hospitals and departments PLUS hiring bonuses ($3-5k), moving allowances, etc. now new grads have to basically take what they can get, IF ANYTHING.
