Forced to Quit My Job To Follow My Dreams

I just need to vent a little,so here goes......I am a single mother of 3,who has always wanted to go into the Nursing field. But for one reason or another,I've never been able to pursue it.After over 10 years of putting my dream on hold,I decided that now is the time.So I began to study and prepare,I passed all the necessary tests and was accepted into school, with a start date of Jan 4,2010:yeah: My plan was to continue to work at my non-nursing related job(part time):typingand go to school evening/weekends. However everything changed just last week, when I got a phone call from my school informing me that they didnt have enough enrollments in the evening/weekend program,so therefore it was being cancelled, they gave me two options:1.Wait until May(and hope there would be enough evening/weekend enrollments) or 2.Switch to morning classes Naturally,I choose to start in the morning classes,I mean,Why wait til May and there was no guarantee? I could just take my employer the new school schedule and then I could work evenings instead, since we stay open til midnight,Right?.....WRONG!! I was told that they couldnt change my schedule and that I am expected to be at work on monday morning at my regularly scheduled time, which is the same time time I should be in my first class!!:angryfire:banghead:

So I would just like to know if any of you have ever been put in this situation? What did you do?How did it turn out for you? also any words of encouragement, would be greatly appreciated and By the way,if i didnt mention it before....I am choosing to follow my dreams and to my former employer this is what I think of your desk job:throcomp:

Wow, I really feel for you. I'm not sure what you're doing currently, but it sounds like you need to find a new employer who's willing to work with you.

However, if it's going to be tough leaving your job and starting a new one, which I imagine it would be as a single mother with three children, your best option might be to wait it out until they have enough students. It's not the ideal option, but it provides for your family and is stable employment; plus you could look at it in a positive light: after ten years you're finally at least heading in the right direction and you've already passed the entrance exams. A few more months isn't all that bad in the grand scheme of things.

Whatever you end up doing, good luck and I wish you the best. :)

I am a big believer in having Faith. Things happen for a reason and God always provides. I know when I was unemployed several years ago, I got pregnant. I had no idea how things were going to work out. My mom says it will work, have faith. And you know what? I did and I was always able to provide for my family. There was never a time when I wasn't able to buy food or diapers for my son. Granted I did have a husband who works but definately did not make enough to pay everything on his own.

Find out why they are against you working at night. So if you feel it is right I say go for it! Maybe you can find a job in a hospital working at night or something like that.

Don't take this the wrong way. Anyways, follow our dreams! Who gives a you know what about what your boss thinks. You want to become a nurse!?!? I say, "Do it!!!" I'm about 1.5 years away from getting my BSN degree. I've been busting my a** towards getting that degree. I've had people tell me in the past, well, why don't you just stick around for a while. NO! This is life. Humans live only once. Accomplish your dreams. I applaud you for following your dreams. Negative people tell you that crap because they never have the ambition to achieve something in life. You have that chance to make something of yourself. Don't waste it! Good Luck.

Well, I always found it interesting how someone who needed a little help with the schedule here and there because of school could be told to go away when the worthless employee could get schedule changes any time they wanted to show everyone how favored they were. Needless to say, treating the good employee that way, ensures that the worthless employees are what is left to the employer down the road when the good employee seeks respect elsewhere. But of course, that is what the employer wants. Why, I'll never figure out.

As a single mother of two who heard the tired old "How do you think this is going to work young lady?" routine one too many times, i say GO FOR IT! It works out in the end. You will find a way to make ends meet if you are properly motivated and you clearly are.

Life is a self-fulfilling prophecy...

Did they tell you that they wouldn't be able to accomodate your schedule at all or just for that week? I could maybe see where it might be tough for an employer to shift things around on such short notice, but they should be able to work with you in the future. For the coming week, you could always talk to whoever comes in after you and find out if you could switch shifts with them.

I'd put it in writing that due to school obligations, that you'll no longer be able to work mornings. Request to change shifts. After that, it's up to them. They'll either have to work around your new schedule or hire someone else and train them.

Sounds like it's no skin off your back no matter what happens, though.. so congrats on starting school and good luck!

Sorry I don't want to sound rude, but I am new to allnurses.com. How do you post a title?

Wow! How timely is your post!

I'm sitting here debating with myself as it its time to tell the HH job that has me working 10-12 hrs dly, and using my weekends to get caught up on the charting to take a flying leap to continue my training in Healing Touch.

The company has gone to a new management this past year, demands are unrealistic, expectations continue to change as the staff struggle to provide a good job. Morale has never been worse.

I enjoyed HH until recently.. but fine my style of nursing isn't what Medicare wants documented... Healing Touch isn't a oasis question.

It's been my dream to use my skills in a truly complimentary way....reading all this posts to follow one's dream is truly encouraging.

Yeah, girl.. go for it!! As one poster said, the Good Lord always takes care of us.

I love conversations like this. The Lord will NEvER give you more than you can bear. To paraphrase Mathew 19:26- "ALL things are possible with God"

i completely agree.. go for it! All you have in this life is yourself to depend on. If you want your dreams to come true, you just have to suck it up and make it happen, b/c it seems like there is always someone ready to break you down, tell you that you cant make it, you wont make it, or by god you cant work nights! Lucky for me, my employer has been the same since i was in high school, and now i have 1 1/2 years left in nursing school, and with ALL my hectic schedule changes, at very last second i might add, i have never been threatened or even questioned. SO.. poo on your boss, and do what makes YOU happy. If you're going to be sad, and feel like you are taking a step back by waiting til may.. guess your boss better have more than JUST you opening on monday, b/c you'll be sitting pretty in class :) Congrats! lol:yeah:

I just wanted to wish you luck! You can do this. I made it through nursing school as a single mom. It took a lot of discipline and hard work, but I managed to juggle everything and graduate with a 3.8 gpa. I studied at night after my son was asleep. Stay organized and make time for your children. You will make it!
