I am hearing more and more that the red tape line will get smaller and smaller in diameter to to the economy and the float concept will be "re-orchestrated" in whatever * way the hospitals can save money. Have you all heard anything?

"the red tape line will get smaller and smaller in diameter to to the economy "

I don't understand what that means...

I'm not sure what you are saying with "the red tape line" but I know our hospital did away with the float pool about a year ago. All the nurses had to either go to a floor/department or find another job. Just an FYI we are the level one trauma center and biggest hospital in the area.

The Red Tape means that its an arbitray position and will be extinquished by ALL MEANS NECESSARY if the HO$PITALS have their say-so. Does this help? Thanks.

Wow what do you do about holes in the schedule or sick calls then? Just work short?

When someone calls off or if they are short then they pull a nurse from another floor. It kind of stinks.

I think my hospital is no longer hiring for the flex-team/float pool right now.

They stated a couple of years ago that one goal was to eliminate need for agency and traveler nurses to save on cost.

When that got accomplished, they are cutting back on float pool nurses. Nurses already working are fine, just no new ones are being hired for now.

Holes in the schedule don't seem to be the problem they used to be.

Float pool nurses are some of the most versatile investments the hospital can make. Sounds like a very poor fiscal decision to me.

We hae not had a "float pool" ever. When there is a call-in and our unit census is low someone floats. No one likes it.

Why are they an investment? Seems as if they have always been treated like an arbitrary expense? Perhaps?
