Ever notice this about allnurses?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

It regulary happens that someone posts a question or brings up a topic, and is immediately told "This has been discussed before. Do a search."

Then-

When someone does a search and posts in the threads they find, someone will tell them "Did you notice how old this thread is?"

:uhoh3:

Unless it is a serious bandwith issue, why do we care if there are numerous threads with similar topics over the course of time? When I see something that isn't interesting to me, I pass it by. Not really that hard...

Staff discussed this issue back in '98 and determined that it isn't a problem.

I think it is just a continued lack of patience on behalf of the nurses who have been here the longest. I try to remember that a lot of people on here are new. Even though I have been a member for a few years, I don't get here often and wouldn't know something was already discussed necessarily. Sometimes, I just feel I have something to add to an older discussion.

I just wish everyone could learn to be a tad bit nicer/patient with members as a whole.

However, if staff advises someone to "do a search" it is because part of our job is to keep the board running smooth. I've seen plenty of times when in one forum that I see three different members posting the same question in three separate threads. This clutters up the board, fragments, and tends to have questions going unanswered because members are tired of answering the same question.

I suppose this is most often seen in the student forums. There are repetative posts about who passed at how many questions. You see hundreds of those threads, each one started by a new member. Staff never says "do a search" in those forums...and it probably wouldn't make much sense to.

I just think everyone could be a bit more patient--staff needs to understand that new people might not necessarily know how to do a search. Members need to show respect to one another by not shooting them down because they bring up old news. What's old news to some is new information for others.

The best way to handle this is -don't read it if its a subject you've gotten tired of.

There are lots of threads you can read rather than that one.

If you feel you must tell a possible newbie about the search option, then do it nicely and move on.

Problem solved.

You took the words right out of my keyboard! I never did understand clicking on a thread that you already don't like by just reading the title, then clicking on 'reply' to tell the OP that they shouldn't have posted it. It seems like a big old waste of time to me.

But ya can't do a search in real life ...

Sure you can! It's called...Google!;)

I remember when I was new to allnurses, and didn't know any better, I dug through some of the older threads and added an opinion to a topic. I got a PM from someone who told me that I had better watch out from touching that subject, because it would start a flame war. I was so apologetic that I posted a thread saying so. Someone else answered and said that they enjoy the controversy.

Now, I just don't care. I look and comment as I see fit.

As many other posters on this thread have mentioned, it is best to just ignore repeat threads if that is not your thing. If you are going to waste your time to answer, you are only frustrating yourself.

I admit, the NCLEX threads got really, really annoying. Same thing; "I got 75...did I pass?" or "I think I got the last question wrong, what does that mean?" I also notice in the NCLEX threads that people tell someone "Well if you got 85, (NCLEX-PN for example), you definitely passed". That last one, to me, is almost the same as a doctor telling you without an assessment or labs "You don't have cancer". False reassurance is just plain wrong. We all know that for most people, NCLEX has been a whopper. All you can do is wish them the very best, and be there for them to offer alternative suggestions if in case the test goes south for them. I peek every now and then, but I rarely post there anymore. But, I would not want to put down an experience that is real to someone else, as well as an experience I had for myself.

:trout: How about, "Are all nurses mean like the witches I work with?" or "Why are nurses all shrews?" :lol2:

Well, since I am perfect, none of those particular threads can even remotely describe moi:trout::uhoh3::lol2:

What do you think of threads like [MOUSE]"I hate nursing and everything about it!!!"[/MOUSE]

or

"I'm leaving nursing forever because it sucks!!!"

or[EVIL] "Mean Doctors, What Should I do?"[/EVIL]

or [bANANA]"Should I quit my job?"[/bANANA]

Oh that's too funny! I have to admit that I got frustrated when someone posted a topic about dating physicians again. It seemed to me that every week someone is posting topics about doctors: what they think, what they wear, how they act, who they date, how they treat us, how we should treat them, how mean they are, how they nice they are and on and on.

But in general, I don't get bent out of shape at repeat topics; if they don't interest me I just avoid them.
