Drug Testing

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I'm going to get raked over the coals for this one...

But I just HAD to ask this question.

At any point in your nursing career were you drug tested?

I'll say no more.

And no, I'm not a pothead. ;)

It would be very, highly, extremely unlikely to test positive from second hand smoke.

I asked one of the Occ Health MDs about that once...using a Dave Matthews Band concert as my example. ;) She said there would be no way I could test positive from being around the smoke second hand.

I also checked the package insert on our test cards, and it gave certain cutoff levels for THC, and said it would be very unlikely for second hand smoke to reach the cutoff level.

Now that's a can of worms. Too many people legally drink alcohol. Are you saying nurses shouldn't drink alcohol? Wouldn't bother me, but that's a can of worms. :)

I will just say on this one issue that I do agree. I know many people that drink,(most of them beer)for several hours each night and do not consider themselves alcoholic.

I however do consider them alcohoics.

If you drink 6-8 beers every night just to "take the edge off" that is just as or more dangerous than someone smoking a little pot in the evening 8 to 10 hours prior to returning too work.

I just think the entire issue is out of control surrounding marijuana because legalization would be the beginning of the end of the war on drugs and our U.S. Govt. makes too much money from that little enterprise.

I have heard varying responses to the question of testing positive from second hand smoke-do you have any input

When I was about 15 I went to my first concert - Rob Zombie and Korn. We had nosebleed seats and it was in an arena. Near the end of the show there was this thick green haze all around us. We were having so much fun and I looked down and saw my feet hundreds of feet below me. It was the weirdest thing! That's my experience with a second-hand smoke high. Can it be tested positive? No idea. But the feeling is there so maybe.

I completely agree it is exactly like prohibition except that the Govt. was not making any money from keeping Alcohol illegal. They are making tons by keeping marijuana illegal.

Although, if one were to offset the money the Govt. makes by the amount of money we tax payers spend to lock up drug offenders and the number of prisons that would probably close if they were not full of drug offenders the entire issue would be a quagmire.

I've asked this before but here goes again..do doctors get tested too?

Yes, my fiance was drug tested before he started med school. This particular med school also requires females to take a pregnancy test. (complete invasion of privacy if you ask me)

My employer does not do pre-employment drug screening.

A pregnancy test? That's against human rights! That's grounds for a law suit and you could prove it was discrimination as well! I can't believe it.

Where is this medical school?

In Canada wee do not get drug tested. I guess it is treated as personal privacy. It all comes down to how you practice. If you were a concern then it becomes a concern.

Definitely! *slaps you a highfive* ;)

Well the entire thing is ridiculous as it is currently argued. The difference in legal substances such as alcohol and cigarettes, caffiene VS illicit drugs Marijuana, Cocaine, Heroin, the big argument is that they are addictive. Yes all of them are addictive. They will kill you, yes all of them will kill you. The Gov. has found a way to tax and control the legalized items and can not hope to gain such a strong control over the illicit drugs hence they remain illegal.
