So, this week has been really hard. I am getting nowhere in my job search...I mean, not even one call back with 50+ resumes being sent out. But today, both of my close nursing "buddies" got jobs at 2 of the big hospitals in our state. And I know I should be happy for them, and I guess I am in some way, but mostly I feel jealous! And angry, and then jealous again. And sprinkled in there I also am starting to be hard on myself!! What am I doing wrong????:banghead:

I would take a look at your resume and look for any mistakes or ways to make it better/more impressive. Really sell yourself in you resume. Also, it could be that your friends have more experience than you.

It's hard to not feel anger or jealousy in your situation, but take it a constructive criticism and use it it work twice as hard at getting your dream job.

Good luck on the job search.

To OP. many places offer incentives to employees that recruit. Don't show your jealousy to your 'buddies', they may be your in to getting an interview at their institutions!

Look at the bright side. Now that you have someone on "the inside" perhaps they can keep you posted about upcoming open positions. It never hurts to have a friend put in a good word or two to a manager. Especially if they are doing well on the unit. This could still work out to be a positive for you. Its true, "sometimes its not what you know but who you know". Keep positive.

After 4 weeks of job search, I got my first indication of interest. And I have been taking a hard look at my résumé. Should this interview not lead to work, I will be working on punchier cover letters and job objectives.

Have your nursing buddies look at your resume and see if they can improve it. I had mine do that and it has gotten more interest when she got done with it. I understand your pain though. I want a better job and my friends have it. Good luck though.

I think it is perfectly normal and human to feel jealous. Just don't let it get the best of you.

It's okay to feel jealous, especially at moments of extreme frustration - it's just human nature. It isn't okay to act on it towards your friends. If you must, beat the heck out of a pillow or use another non-destructive way of releasing your frustration, but don't be rude, catty, belittling, petty, or anything else of that sort to your friends. Then focus on how happy they are, how happy you are that they're happy, and how happy you are that having close friends at this facility may soon open doors there for you as well.

In the meantime, I agree with having someone look over your resume. It never hurts to have someone experienced help with something like that.

It's incredibly frustrating applying for jobs, putting out so many resumes, making phone calls, and getting so few results back for all of your effort!

It's also hard not to feel let down when you can't get a job, but your friends can. Personally, I'm really happy for my friends who managed to get a job as a new grad in this market. I know that we all worked so hard for this, and it's good to see the possibilities out there that could also come my way.

Sometimes getting a job has more to do with timing, connections, or luck, than anything else. That your friends now have jobs should make you feel hopeful that you too will get one. Plus, now you have a connection that may help you in getting your foot in the door.

Keep at it, and good luck in your job search!

Your emotions are understandable. But, don't let them take control of the situation. Good nursing school friends are gems and you want to keep them--years from now you will be able to talk/laugh about this. Celebrate for your friends as your turn may be around the corner. Maybe you need a break from the job search to regroup and refresh yourself.
