Do you enjoy TV surgical/medical shows?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I will be starting the nursing program in May, and I wonder if other students or nurses can tell me if they enjoy watching medical and surgical shows or not? I love watching them all! Will I grow to dislike them once clinicals start or after I become a nurse? What was your experience?

Thanks for the input!

hangs head in embarrassment I tend to yell at the TV and say "no, no, that's not how you deliver a baby!"

and "OMG, a doctor could NEVER say that to a pt!"

and "Where are all the nurses???"

and "What doctor walks into a pt's house and starts snooping for poisons?" (House)

What doctor walks into a pt's house, period???

I have never seen a Dr or intern ever draw blood..

I had an inquisitive resident once WHO ASKED ME HOW to draw blood! I trained him for drawing out of a central, an IV, an actual poke, AND....how to insert an IV! I even went out of my way to teach him nursing tricks and he actually appreciated it! :monkeydance:

I like the reality shows. Dr. G Medical Examiner is my fav. My TIVO stays really busy taping on the Discovery, and Discovery Health channels.

I really like the earlier seasons of ER. My Mother constantly complains that she doesn't understand a thing of what's going on... "too technical", she says (while I'm rolling around laughing at their inaccuracies). I think the newer seasons have lost the edge.

I also like House - despite the "Clean up on aisle 5! This is why I invented nurses" attitude the show proposes.

cheers,

I love Grey's. I think House is the man. Scrubs is hysterical, the only sitcom I watch.

ER is getting boring but I still watch, what can I say, been watching forever.

Yes a lot of drama and innacuracies but it IS entertainment. I have accuracy in the real world.

I love House but Puleeeeezeee - the way they always snoop in people's homes and cars! :nono:

I am a huge scrubs fan. I like Grey's anatomy too... but it lost something after the main character spent 2 hours getting cpr and had a miraculous recovery (with no neurological side effects at all!) oh please!

And as others have said, it tends to greatly annoy friends and family when you yell things at the TV: "It's Vist-a-ril, not Vits-a ril!" "Hey, somebody put the side rails up!!!" "Oh, c'mon, you gotta be kidding, no way will you ever see a doctor do that!!" "How do they get that ventilator to work with a nasal cannula, anyway??" :lol2:

My family knows how your family feels, santhony!!!

I should probably just let it go & go on about my day but it really bugs me when docs are drawing blood, getting VS, thumping on chests, transporting patients, and holding hands when pts die. There may be a select few that do that, but in my neck of the woods, 'taint how it happens.

Those things happen where I work.

And while in medical school, don't all docs-to-be have to learn to draw labs, start IV's, run urine to the lab, etc?

I LOVE House LOL but have never watched ER or anything and didn't start watching House til the past few months and I've done it mostly by seeing reruns or like now have rented some season dvd's. I like it b/c of the detective work mostly...and while I do not like how House acts I do find him humorous sometimes!

I read a great book about House MD. It goes into detail about some of the stories on the show and if they are even possible . . . and guess what? They are.

There is an interesting review though:

"Holtz draws the conclusion that in the real world House would quickly be out of a job. Of course he would, but if TV dramas restricted themselves to reality no one would watch. I don't watch House to learn about medicine, I watch it to see an ongoing story about a brilliant man with an unconventional way of looking at things."

I guess I'm one of those who is more interested in the drama and not the reality.

I love the drama part too I suppose - I like the way House and his entire team think, I like that they do not agree but eventually with them all they come to conclusions...

again can't see it being real LOL, I've never seen that many doctors on the ONE patient LOL but its great to watch!

The important thing to remember is, that it is only a show to entertain us. If you can ignore all the inaccuracies(not all of us can!!) then it is fun to watch. Our doctors don't look like that for instance!!
