Do you enjoy TV surgical/medical shows?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I will be starting the nursing program in May, and I wonder if other students or nurses can tell me if they enjoy watching medical and surgical shows or not? I love watching them all! Will I grow to dislike them once clinicals start or after I become a nurse? What was your experience?

Thanks for the input!

:jester: i love house,md, sorry:rotfl: but i only wish sometimes i could talk to pt like he does!!

yes the show is very unrealistic, but hey it is tv!

i can wait till the new episode comes on each week. the weeks that american idol takes house off makes me soooooo:sniff: :scrying: i stll don't get the whole reality shows at all!!

yeah for house!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The (only) nurse is kinda portrayed in a promiscuous manner.

They do show other nurses but they aren't main characters. I have heard rumors that they have cast a new sexy male to play a nurse on GA. I guess we will have to see what kind of role he will have.

Doesn't it bother you how nurses are portrayed on shows like House, Grey's Anatomy, etc.? I used to think I didn't care until I told my (TV addicted) 12yo cousin I was a nurse and she said, "so you just stand there while the doctor gives you orders?." Holy! These shows perpetuate that and that is what people BELIEVE! Maybe that's why every ambitious teen wants to be a Dr? They're the "heroes" who get to sit by the bedside of a dying pt. calling "nurse!" when they want to give an order. It makes me so mad. That's why I don't watch those shows.

I annoy everyone by saying, "The NURSE does that! The NURSE would do that!". :o

Real medical shows like Trauma Life In the ER etc... are good to watch I know it led me into nursing. Other shows like Scrubs, House and Grey's Anatomy, are so unrealistic but good only for entertainment, when u actually get to know the hospital those shows ( Scrubs etc..) will seem so fake. I don't get tired of shows like Trauma Life In the ER though, I guess it's a personal opinion.

I love ER, Grey's Anatomy, and House . .. I just watch it for the entertainment and don't talk about the inaccuracies. My dd and I stay up together on Thursday night to watch first Greys and then ER together. I mostly talk about the lack of moral values - a good avenue for talking with my dd.

It is just all fun . . . . .

I used to watch Trauma- Life in the ER years ago.

I work in a Trauma ICU. I decided I don't need to watch the drama.

I live the drama.

I watch very little TV now.

I love House, loved ER in the first few seasons.

I got such a laugh out of one episode of ER where the ER staff frantically tried to find a heart for a man needing a transplant who was kept in the ER!!!!!!!

And the movie John Q.......don't even get me started!

I just recently watched "John Q" . .. . .I liked it just for the chance to get back at that mean old hospital administrator. ;)

They do keep people a long time in the ER but I guess I just felt like maybe in big city hospitals, where I've read that pts stay for days due to overcrowding on the floors, it isn't unusual.

I'm sure "housewives" get mad about their portrayal on "Desperate Housewives". :monkeydance:

But Steph, ER staff do not scour around looking for organs. It just don't happen that way. Donor procurement nurses have donors and they look for the recipients.

I like House because they throw out so many differential diagnoses that it keeps me busy looking things up in my nursing school books. Sometimes seeing symptoms of something obscure on TV will help cement a concept into my brain.

The other show I really liked was "Surgery Saved My Life" on the Discovery Channel. The photography on that show was amazing! I hope they do more episodes.

House is very interesting to say the least..lol..I am now stuck on "Strong Medicine" on Lifetime...I don't recall this ever being on regular primetime but I love it now! Maybe it is a Lifetime exclusive show. Hmmm...
